I also spent a lot of time in the latter part of the year working to turn my fanfic "She Just Wanted to be Heard" into an original work. I knew that would involve much transformation and change so it wouldn't just be a copy of the works it is based on, and to do that, I needed feedback. A friend of mine from high school, Melissa Jarvis, has published two books in the time travel romance genre, and she was talking on Facebook about doing a panel at ComicCon about fanfic. She said we could ask her any question we wanted, so I sent her a FB message about how to turn a fanfic into an original work. She was totally open to helping me, and has helped me tremendously with feedback about what needs to change and what can stay the same in order to separate my story from "Ringu" and "The Ring" as much as possible. She's given me some great advice. I now feel like I can really turn SJWTBH into an original series, whereas before, I didn't have as much confidence about it. I mean, some of the basic similarities will still be there; there isn't a lot I can do about that without scrapping the entire story. But, I have worked to change so many details that you might not even notice.
Anyway, to the fanfic!
Favorites of the bunch: Well, there were only two, and I love them both.
Best of the bunch: I thought they were both good. :)
Most under-appreciated by the universe: "The Apostle of Tarsus." I've put out two parts of it at this point and will write the third and final part, but there still fails to be a single comment on any of it to this day. I don't think that has much to do with the quality of the story, but sometimes, I lose my confidence and it does hurt. "Miracles" is an unknown fandom to most people, which does drag the story down in terms of possible feedback. I don't really know what to do about that. I need and want feedback and want to have conversations about my fics just as much as anyone else, but I don't know how to make that happen. Most people have moved on from "Miracles." I wish I could move on too, but Skeet Ulrich as Paul Callan is too damn captivating. I'm still having trouble letting go.
Most fun to write: "It's About Making a Mess." The whole story was about fun, silly times with the SPN kids gang, so how could it not be fun to write?
Sexiest fic: The Apostle of Tarsus. Mostly it's a romance/drama fic, and because it's told from Sam's POV, the sex scenes aren't extremely detailed because Sam isn't that kind of guy, to tell about his sex life with the woman he loves in sticky detail. But there is some definite sexiness in there! :D
Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you: Dean dating a drug dealer. I honestly have no idea how that came about. It just seemed like something that would be interesting to write. When it comes to serious relationships, Dean seems to go for "good girls" and it doesn't work out for him. What would it be like if he was with someone who had reason to be just as secretive about her life as he did?
Hardest fic to write: Apostle of Tarsus. I feel Sam's emotions while writing the fic. Just think of what that would be like. O_o
Biggest disappointment: That I didn't write more in 2013. I had lots of time to do it, but lack of confidence in my work made me avoid writing. I'm feeling a bit better about it now. :)
Biggest surprise: "It's About Making a Mess" coming together so well.
Most telling fic: Uhhh... I guess both of them for their own reasons. I wish I could be more eloquent than that about this subject, but I don't really feel that either fic revealed anything big about me.
Craziest scene you still can't believe you wrote: Castiel on the bumper cars.
WiP or 'verse that has the potential to become an epic if you let it: Apostle of Tarsus. Two words: Alternate universes.
Best idea of the year: Vegetarian Lasagna vs. Kit Kat Lasagna!
Story I want remembered: Both for their own reasons. Again, not a very eloquent answer, but that's how I really feel.
