It happened in a split second. Her eagerness had knocked him off his feet; her haste was almost too much.

But it wasn’t supposed to happen that way. He had planned on coercing her, with a speech on what a loyal and dutiful wife should do, which he had spent the last few hours preparing.  All that work had been for nothing.

Perhaps, she though, if she had let him encourage her or give her his reasons he wouldn’t feel so awkward and stunned. But it was already done, and there was no turning back.

Before Prince Ozai could fully collect his thoughts, on what just really happened two guards rushed to him in a panic. They announced that his father was dead and his wife had gone mad.

Ozai was speechless in disbelief for a moment. The bafflement quickly faded as he became furious. He was angry about how she hadn’t been as sneaky and discreet as he had asked her to be.

He didn’t have choice about what to do next anymore. He either had to sentence her to death or banish her. He disliked both options.

The dining hall felt tranquil from the hustle and bustle of the day’s events. Ozai sat at the table with his two children.

The palace staff had made sure both were isolated from the chaos. Neither one of them knew of the horrific event of their grandfather’s death, or about what was to become of their mother. If Ozai had his way, his offspring would never learn the truth. All they knew was that their father was appointed the next Fire Lord.

Ursa’s absence at the following day’s dinner bothered Ozai.  He couldn’t recall a time they had eaten without her. It didn’t help that his eldest was asking if she was ill.

The next day was the day he had looked forward to his entire life. No one expected him to ever become Fire Lord.

Ursa had been the only other person who shared his passion with him. She put him there, but not how he had wanted it. He wanted her beside him during the ceremony, but that would forever remain a dream.

His world was nothing and everything he had ever wanted. But he felt the floor crumble below his feet.

A week after the incident, Fire Lord Ozai laid alone in his bed staring at the ceiling.  He couldn’t stop going over how things had happened. What Ursa had done.  How much he missed her. The way he found himself moping about reminded him of Iroh. He hated the idea of being soft and weak like his brother.

Was this what she had planned?  Was how things turned out as she intended? Did she purposefully deceive him? No, she would have never done that to him. But the thought of the idea infuriated him, in the late hours of the night he couldn’t help but suspect her.

He needed to get out of that mindset; it was compromising his sleep schedule and mental focus. He didn’t want to follow in Iroh’s footsteps. He knew that it wouldn’t be hard for certain others to overthrow him at this point. After all, Iroh had more pull with the military than he did.

If he couldn’t get over the events of last week, he at least needed to fake it. He needed to feign strength until he regain his nerves.
