The Journal of Dora Damage by Belinda Starling
There was a lot I liked about The Journal of Dora Damage. I enjoy stories in which Bad Things Are Made Better and I really liked the main plot of the lonely, unappreciated woman courageously saving her family from the workhouse in cruel and misogynist Victorian London.

Peter Ackroyd: Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem
Before I discovered fan fiction I used to read a lot and went through a lot of crime fiction of the sort where you were reading because you cared about the detective not the plot. New Year
This year I'm aiming to read 20 books I haven't read before, 10 fiction and 10 non-fiction; I'm not going to count re-reads. Just to make it more of a torment I shall try to write a review of everything I read whether new or not. -

Zadie Smith: On Beauty
I really, really enjoyed this, so much so that I found it quite painful to read - I so wanted Kiki to forgive Howard and so much didn't want Howard to have sex with Victoria, I had to stop reading it and couldn't go back to it for ages. I need to read 'White Teeth' now.

How come I still don't know what 'tropes' means? I must've looked it up in many times but still the bloody word will not enter my mind. It probably doesn't matter, it's probably just pretentiousness... -
Books 27-29 all Wooster
I want to get to know the novels better but not so much that I can no longer enjoy the series; reading these three I found myself comparing them with the TV, to the TV's disadvantage. I really hope I don't turn against the series as I do love it. It just seems to work better with the plots of the short stories than it does of the novels. ( Read more... ) -
