There was a lot I liked about The Journal of Dora Damage. I enjoy stories in which Bad Things Are Made Better and I really liked the main plot of the lonely, unappreciated woman courageously saving her family from the workhouse in cruel and misogynist Victorian London.

I really, really enjoyed this, so much so that I found it quite painful to read - I so wanted Kiki to forgive Howard and so much didn't want Howard to have sex with Victoria, I had to stop reading it and couldn't go back to it for ages. I need to read 'White Teeth' now.

I want to get to know the novels better but not so much that I can no longer enjoy the series; reading these three I found myself comparing them with the TV, to the TV's disadvantage. I really hope I don't turn against the series as I do love it. It just seems to work better with the plots of the short stories than it does of the novels. ( Read more... )

How have I not read this before? Fabulous.

I really enjoyed it and read it much faster than I've read anything for ages, but by the end I'd had enough of it and I know I'll never read it again.
