Mar 25, 2012 15:40

What is a kink meme? You request a pairing and a prompt/kink (anonymously if you like), and someone else will fill that request anonymously (if they like). Check out the kink meme from last year for how this works in action. Post prompts about any season, character or pairing. Inspired by the venerable st_xi_kink .

Only Hands Can Be Enslaved. (Pietros/Barca) staringiscaring April 6 2012, 18:26:33 UTC
Nyx, the night sky, cocooned the ludus in its dark mists. Pietros gazed up at the constellations of Orion, Callisto, and all the others had his mother had taught him. She had been the daughter of a Greek scholar. The edge of the cliff had been her favorite place to teach. Poisidon’s glory spread out before them as the Hesperides ushered the sun into setting. It had broken her heart when Pietros’ father, the fierce gladiator Numidian, used his influence to put him to apprentice in the ludus. She had wanted him to be a scribe in the villa. Kissing his forehead, she told him that only his hands could be enslaved. His mind would always be free. Neither lived long enough to see him as a man ( ... )

Thank you! Pietros is such a blank canvas in so many ways that I tried to fill in those gaps. I like the idea of him being from a scholarly slave family because of my head canon for Barca. The short of it is that Barca was a nobleman in Carthage whose rage about enslavement and killing his father made him the brute from Gods of the Arena and Blood and Sand. I like the idea of Pietros being brainy because it gives them something to talk about and a way for Barca to let down his guard.

Haha, thanks. Romans were positively in love with Greek culture. They shoe horned a lot of Greek myths onto their country gods.

Yeah, Pietros' slippery background makes him someone that its hard for me to write him.

All we really have about Barca is that one flashback from like episode two which I had to liberally fill in with what I knew of Carthagean history. Sweet, I'm glad to have helped.

Very true. My interpretation is that Barca had decided, after he killed his father, that if the Romans wanted him to be a beast then he would. The Carthaginians were such a sea power that had older roots than Rome so it must have been pretty degrading for the son of a king (or whatever the flashback said. I like to think that he was an admiral's son) to have been conquered by them. That sort of trauma created the beast in him. I thought all this up when I was figuring out what vampire Barca should be like. LOL.

I get so much out of crack. Its truly the gift that keeps on giving.

he sort of decided that he deserved to live out the rest of his life as a gladiator as punishment for killing his father and the rest of his countrymen.

No that is what I mean.

Like how fucking horrible would it be to be defeated at the one thing that you trained your whole life for, see your country salted because of military failure, be enslaved, and then having to kill your dad?

Well, Pietros always seemed more well-spoken than the gladiators so it doesn't disturb canon.

OMG that sounds awesome. I like everything about this and have no problems with a fic happening right here. As a mod, I encourage this strongly.

Spam that fic throughout the fandom when you do!

I'd read it. My take on them is that their relationship started out with Pietros as a fairly young boy (early teens) and Barca protecting him from Gnaeus. Obviously later the relationship developed into something more, but there was still that element of Barca defending him.

I always thought it was sad that they both died thinking the other one had betrayed him.
