And even better if one does know a bit of Hawaiian history.

Of course. I worried both about "Are some jokes lost on those who are not into history?" and "Is this too much compiling PotC-unrelated facts?" Hopefully, I managed to stay close enough to the middle.

This was brilliant! I'm not aware of the history of Hawaii but now you have encouraged me to find out the "official" version.

You wrote:

Hawai'ian includes many loanwords and phrases from European languages, some of which have taken on a peculiar meaning, such as savvy (Understood?), bugger (an expletive), bloody (ditto), shiver me timbers (an expression of outrage), whelp (submissive lover), and arrr (untranslateable affirmative).

I laughed and laughed at this part.

This was very inventive fic that you put a lot of work into. Congratulations on something fun and different. :)

Thank you kindly.
I'm happy to have kindled your interest in Hawaiian history. Polynesian people are sadly neglected in the history books, though they achieved a lot, destroyed a lot, and had stories as intersting as any people elsewhere.
For starters, I would recommend the AUped... Wikipedia entry with its links. That should be fairly comprehensive. I was personally taken, however, with the Polynesian chapters of Jared Diamond's books "Guns, Germs and Steel", and "Collapse".
