There's an adorable red-headed, freckled boy in the preschool I work in who could easily pass for a 4 year old Walter Kovacs. He is mostly a good boy who listens to his teachers and complains when other kids don't do the same.

Can anyone oblige me with some happy!kid fic before I cuddle him to pieces?

Were you thinking something with the adult characters as kids, or with their own children, or de-aged? Damn, there's a lot of definitions of kidfic.

I was thinking along the lines of the characters as kids. The few happy moments in Walter's childhood, or an AU where Walter had a happy childhood, period. I'm sorry I didn't clarify it in my original post. :)

A/N: Essentially a Watchmen retread of this, one of my favorite kidfics of all time in any fandom: http://caffiends.net/viewstory.php?sid=569Some of the guys call Hollis a sissy for babysitting, but he's laughing all the way to the bank. Besides, he likes these kids. He's never had to manage all of them at once, but it shouldn't be too hard. Adrian is prissily well-behaved, Laurie's a goodhearted girl and all property damage is accidental, and Jon is... odd, but harmless. In Hollis's backpack is the old broken pocketwatch he found in a vacant lot the other day, and he's pretty sure the kid will spend the whole evening trying to repair it. The last two are Danny and little Walter Kovacs, who won't even be five until March. Danny is the most trouble of any of them despite being an absolute bundle of joy, since he's enough of a junior scientist to break things Laurie wouldn't even think of. He and Walter are already fast friends, and at least the poor little ( ... )

It's still scary when Daddy leaves, but Walter is almost five and it's time he was braver about things. It's hard tonight, though, in Mr. and Mrs. Veidt's big fancy house and everyone looking so different. Daddy too, in his suit. It's striped up and down, and it's called pinstripe, because of how thin the stripes are. Walter is just wearing regular clothes, jeans and a red t-shirt. So are the other kids, because none of them are going with their parents. It makes Walter feel a little better, since they'll all be in the same boat, but he's staying in Daddy's lap until the last possible minute, even if Dan is here.

Dan is almost five too, and is Walter's bestest friend in the world. He has a mommy and a daddy, and they're making him promise, promise cross his heart and hope to die that he will not take anything apart. Dan is a good boy, but he does do that a lot. His daddy could probably pay for anything of the Veidts's that Danny might break, though. Walter's can't, and he reminds himself again to be very, very good. He ( ... )

Everyone has already been fed, so right now Hollis's job is to make sure everyone shares Adrian's toys and plays nice with them. Adrian is a generous boy but very fussy, and deeply upset when Laurie undoes Charlotte the doll's careful French braid ( ... )

Walter can't help thinking about the Noah story, listening to all that water. It scares him, because so what if God promised never to do it again? Everyone breaks promises. His lip wobbles, and he swallows hard. It will be fine. Daddy always says it will be fine, and he hasn't broken a promise yet. Then Dan is hugging him, and it's warm and makes him feel safe, so he hugs back ( ... )

All of them had had to wash up, of course, one at a time in the second floor guest bathroom because it's the closest, with the flashlight for illumination and a pair of Adrian's pajamas to change into. Thankfully the kid has an extensive wardrobe and they're all about the same size or smaller, so no problem there. Of course Walter had needed Hollis to guard the door for him, more paranoid about privacy than any child his age Hollis had ever seen. Laurie had made a game of charging and trying to open it, but mercifully hadn't succeeded ( ... )
