Shimmering powder is next. It's the same translucent, nearly-lavender pink Wanda's eyelids already are, and she really doesn't understand why Danielle is painting something the color it is. But she lets it be, and does see the slight brightening effect Danielle talks about when she looks in the mirror. Her eyes seem... not so much softer as less flat. Little gold flecks stand out in the brown, and she seems to see the eyes of a lynx and a girl. Danielle smiles. "See how pretty they really are ( ... )

I am loving every inch of this! And I love that your Danielle has a keen eye and is good with makeup. It seems so in line with her perceptive, precise, personality. (Pardon the alliteration)

I love my makeup, I end up getting roped into doing other peoples all the time, and that's just how I feel. It's like a puzzle, taking each feature, seeing what elements it is composed of, and how they work with the rest of the face. Choosing what to highlight and what to subdue. It's fascinating, and a bit of an exotic experience, too; to take a persons face, and bit by bit truly look at what makes them unique and beautiful.

Don't get me wrong, I don't feel the need to slather myself before I go out in public every day, but after a week of walking past the mirror looking tired, frumpy, puffy and drained, it's nice to spend some time on it, just to see the person I feel like staring back at me. It's empowering, I guess.

Really, Danielle just can't help herself. Now that she knows Wanda and how bereft of beauty her life really is (she always suspected about Rorschach) there is just no stopping it. She has to work carefully, though. Can't be a sugar-mama, however much she wants to replace Wanda's entire wardrobe, job, apartment. Life. Still, she does what she can, like the haircut and teaching Wanda to actually apply eyeliner properly. Starts a concerted program of getting more hot meals into her partner even if that skinny little body haunts her dreams. She hope's she's not letting on, but god knows that Rorschach is sharp.

It doesn't seem exactly like unnatural seduction, but it's hard to be sure. Wanda watches her partner carefully, even as she crams brisket into her mouth like someone is about to take it away. It's hard for her to accept charity, but Danielle keeps looking at her so wistfully, talking about how she never gets to cook anymore, that Wanda has to accept. Danielle is a good woman. Could be, should be someone's loving wife ( ... )

The gala doesn't start until half-past nine, and to be on time is to be unfashionably early, so Danielle has barely struggled into her best underwear and a second pair of hose that have actually stayed shimmering and smooth when Wanda arrives. She's nothing but a little sound in the kitchen, but Danielle knows her all the same ( ... )

Wanda is done for, a blushing, stammering mess. "M-modified it off the rack. Was too big, and slutty."

"Well, slutty's all very relative." She almost prowls closer, and Wanda isn't sure how much more of this she can survive. "But this is adorable." She fingers the high and subtle sweetheart neckline, and the edges of the three-quarter sleeves while Wanda tries to keep breathing. "But y'know what you really need?" Danielle murmurs, conspiratorially close. Wanda just shakes her head, incapable of speech.

"Jewelry!" Danielle grins and bounds off, opening old boxes of things that belonged to her mother, grandmother, great-aunts, and even further back. "It all came down to me in the end," she says, soft and a little sad as her fingers comb through a king's ransom in necklaces. "Your shoes are white, right?"

"Yes." Wanda croaks.

"And I know you probably don't want a lot... Here. Pearls. As classy as it gets ( ... )

Anon, you have no idea how incredibly happy I am over this being continued.

I was legit misty-eyed towards the end, throat stuffed with emotion, and mouth stretched wide as can be.

This may sound weird, but what I like the most about this chapter is that for once, a character's friend isn't shocked about their attraction to someone of the same gender, and their reaction instead is more "It's about time!" :D

Of course, something so good as a real conversation about real things cannot last. Soon Danielle is 'making the rounds', and Wanda tags after her, quiet and polite as she can make herself, with no idea what to do. To Danielle's credit, she involves Wanda in the conversation, and keeps her well supplied with elderflower soda, and herself well supplied with champagne. Liberal politics and meaningless gossip swirl around her head, and she ends up just sucking down soda and trying not to snarl. Many of the women speak like Danielle, all rushing excitement and gentle humor and birds, but there are others all stiff and lacquered, worse than her mother because they won't even admit that they're whores.

"Really, Dani! Your arms are getting mannish, and what have I said about wearing brown to everything?"

Dani rolls her eyes and knocks back her fifth glass. "Whatever, I'll be able to rescue myself when the Martians come."

"Danielle's arms are not mannish."

"Well of course you don't think so, dear ( ... )
