Moving flat

Lots to update since last time... finishing exams, trips to Cramond Island where I was told I snore like a 'saw mill', invigilating exams in Glasgow, and I just cut about about 5" of split ends off. But the topic du jour is my moving flat ( Read more... )

if you do decide to do the 'own flat' thing, get a parent to collect rent on your behalf. its very hard to be friends with the tenants, whilst at the same time demanding lots of money. getting someone else to be in charge of the money side of things means you can have a far more friendly and harmonious flat atmosphere.

That is a smart suggestion. I will definitely take note of that.

I've been thinking along similar lines to what you are doing just recently myself. I would be inclined to move in with Colin in the sciffy flat - you are still young and its probably going to be way more fun than worrying about a mortgage. If you make a little profit from letting the other place out that could help you out in times of postgrad brokeness too. Just my humble opinion. (I decided not to buy a place, even though I would absolutely love to, because I would have to live on my own, and that would probably just make me very depressed).

I think the problem is, there's pros and cons to both flats. To be fair, I'm faced with two good situations, and I have to choose one.

If you can afford it, buy a flat. Considering Edinburgh's history of never having a housing market collapse, it's a fairly sure way to make money.

Would love to do so. However my parents said they wouldnt help me out unless I was going to live in said flat, and I dont want to live alone. Its too early to become a spinster with cats....damned parents.

Well you don't have to get a one person flat. You can get a two person flat with a buy-to-let mortgage, and then get someone to pay you to live in your flat with you.

Of course finding said person isn't always easy...

Two words, either way: lucky git.

I wish I could move in to town... *sighs*

Ah, well the amount of money I've had to pony up to make this thing work is... well...

I'm hoping to see a decent return on it in five years time at any rate.

i was just wondering whether you had decided on what you were going to do flat wise. if you are not going to live there. i was wondering when you would be renting it out from as i would be interesting in living there as it is a great location and i am need of a flat as i have to leave my current one by mid august.

sorry to hassle you and if this may seem a bit strange.
