Unfortunately, I know many ways to put my foot in my mouth. And it really is frustrating to talk with such huge barriers!
I also forgot to mention the fact that Chinese people avoid talking about anything remotely controversial to people they aren't very close to. They don't bond through commiseration or shared dislike--even THAT is too controversial, too un-cheerful. The most famous cartoon in the country is called "Pleasant Goat". So really! What the hell is there to say or do?! American culture and Chinese culture are in some ways just incompatible.
