I think the problem with the Terminator episode (having no real knowledge of canon aside), that there isn't a distinction between what is real and what isn't. This episode would work better in novel form, for example. There's not enough clues for the audience or for Sarah that this very elaborate dream world is, in fact, a dream. The warning signs are too underplayed, and the death scene is too overplayed - there was still no clear answer for what is real and what's not besides the 'oh she's still breathing, so in that case.'
I can see why they wouldn't want the episode to follow the formulaic 'this is a dream' but it still doesn't work well.
