Yeah, I really felt bad for Billy, because though he became evil enough in the end to get invited to join the Evil League of Evil, it was a bitter substitute for what he really wanted - which was Penny.
And seeing Joss's writing stable there really was great fun.
Oh, you know I broke down and watched this morning. I LOVE BEING ASS CRAMMED BY JOSS, AFTERALL. **eyeroll at self**
If it weren't for Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion just going for it, it would have outright sucked. BUT, since I found NF to be exceedingly hilarious, I'll just say I don't feel like I wasted all my time. What can I say? He cracks my shit up, especially when he's being a monster tool.
I liked it well enough for what it was, (and really did love the last act), and I was pleased to find out how well NPH sang. Fillion bugged the shit out of me at first with the campy over-acting, but after getting to know The Tool, um, I mean Captain Hammer (*;-)*), he played the part perfectly.
I just wish Joss was able to write a story wherein a woman doesn't end up skewered, you know?
Oh, that was soooo Joss. I made my special "I HATE JOSS" face. Haven't done that one in a while. ;) I'm telling you, he says EMPOWERMENT and shit, but I bet his therapist has some freaky-ass notes about his real women issues. phhht.
Yeah, Joss's idea of female empowerment =/= actual female empowerment. I just wish the motherfucker was a less talented storyteller so I could quit him. :-P
I don't think Penny had anything to do with female empowerment... I don't even think she was anything except the trigger for Horrible's decision to kill.
I did like the way they pulled off the ending. Dr. Horrible ended up in the evil league of evil because Penny died. But Penny only died because he hesitated trying to kill Hammer. Hammer didn't have the same problem killing Horrible, though, and used the defective ray-gun to try, killing Penny. Horrible got what he wanted, but only because the hero had no problems with killing.
So good, so very Joss. I really enjoyed it. All of it.
Seriously, Penny really was just a tug-toy between the two men.
And, yeah, Captain Hammer was a less than stellar hero, and proved himself more immoral than Dr. Horrible, and Billy was a less than evil bad guy until Penny's death which was/was not his doing. And at the end, the emptiness of it all just aches.
Which is a completely Jossian ending and why I really, really liked it.

And of course we should have seen the ending - revenge never works out.
