There was no blogging on this final act of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, though there was plenty of singing.
I've seen a lot of disappointment about this episode on my flist, but I have to say that I liked this one best out of the three. Of course, it was a typically Jossian ending with the death of the woman, because Joss does love to kill the ladies. I think it has something to do with female empowerment. *eyeroll*
Joss put his own Jossian twist to the common comic book trope by making the "villain" for all his I AM EVIL! posturing a sweet and ineffective man-child playing at being bad. The "hero" on the other hand was a self-centered tool that I think pretty much everyone was hoping would end up getting punched on the nose a good one. The girl was simply a contrivance, a thing that one wanted and the other took because he could and because the other one wanted her. In reality, she could have been any inanimate object, but Felicia Day was cute and sang nicely and I ended up really liking Penny. Of course, that was part of Joss's evil plan because you have to actually like the sacrificial goat in order to be affected by its slaughter.
So in this final act, Captain Hammer and Penny are celebrating the opening of the new Homeless Shelter. Hammer is posturing and Penny is trying to convince herself that being with Captain Hammer is the right thing because he's the hero. While she's trying to convince herself, she's waiting in the laundromat with two frozen yogurts for Billy to come in and share them with her. But Billy doesn't come. He's busy being evil-ish.
I should have known, of course, that Joss was going to kill Penny, however, I'm still stupid in the Ways of Joss and it did come as a surprise. However, Joss loves angst, and needed a catalyst to send Billy over the edge and really into his Dr. Horrible persona, and so she had to get offed. And Billy actually does become Dr. Horrible, but you can see he hates it, and hates himself, even as his side-kick, Moist, seems to be having the time of his life.
So, Dr. Horrible does get to become a member of the Evil League of Evil, but he doesn't feel a thing. The End
Except, it doesn't feel finished by a long shot. I don't know if Joss is planning any more webisodes, because, of course, it is an ending. We can use our imaginations as to where Billy goes from here. But, knowing Joss, don't be surprised if there's a comic book brewing in the back of his mind.
And on another note, it was fun to see the gang again - Fury, Goddard, Petri, and, yes, even Noxon.
