When I write my dissertation, I sometimes want to insert funny comments in there. I don't mean hilarious anecdotes, but more like linguistic inside jokes. It can be lame, or it can be fun. I haven't decided yet. But it's probably unprofessional, so I shouldn't insert anything of that type

If you want to insert a linguistic inside joke in your dissertation, but are not sure whether it's a good idea or not, try reading it and thinking as your professor would. Then, you'll find out if inserting it is a good idea.
