nothing so important as trifles

I am still trying to make out what I think of this week’s Sherlock. This post is kind of me trying to work them out in plus-minus format, and being RIDICULOUSLY tl;dr in the process. If you click anyway, I did warn you!

stuffs, with mondo spoilers, and yes I just used the word mondo )

Yes, I feel like they tried to hard to shove Holmes into modern ideas of obsession and psychology; too much like an aspie or a sociopath. It is an Edwardian text and therefore always should emphasise their values I think, which were of compassion, passionate love and a Romantic drive for justice.

WTF was that thing where he took the explosives off Watson and Watson was like LOL THAT LOOKED GAY and then Holmes was like EH I DONT CARE??? IDK if it was fanservice or cockblocking.

And I disliked Moriarty. He seemed too much like a random dude. And then they made him talk like HIM in the Powerpuff Girls.

And yeah, the obvious whiteness and women problems. IDK I love watching it and then there are moments where I go WRYYY

Yeah, I think the translation to modern day has done pretty well - I think the texts-as-telegrams thing works really well, and Holmes lounging around, and bits like in episode 2 where he works out the guy has been abroad a lot - but they took Watson a lot too literally on the 'he's emotionless' front, I think. Holmes doesn't care about most social things, but that is NOT the same thing as being quite that hurtful.

The that-looked-gay comment just sums up everything wrong with the gay jokes - it doesn't (at least to me) feel like they're deliberately saying gayness = evil, but they don't seem to know what they are saying except that Watson isn't gay, which FINE, just SHUT UP ABOUT IT BECAUSE YOU'RE SOUNDING LIKE ASSHOLES. I did like that Holmes doesn't care though - of course he wouldn't, because there's no reason to that isn't stupid!

Apparently there are theories Moriarty is more like a code-name or organisational title, which I now really like the idea of!

And your final sentence is exactly me, too. :)

I like the Moriarty as an organisation thing, but then who is Holmes going to OST with?????

Since they're going out of their way to be like OMG U GUIZ BUT IT SERIOUSLY ISNT GAY

DO YOU BELIEVE US YET

HOW ABOUT NOW

BECAUSE YOUR KINK IS NOT OKAY AND YOU NEED TO STOP GETTING GIRL COOTIES ON MY SHOW.

it probably isn't going to be Watson. Silly tv men, if you don't watch out we'll slash you instead.

zomg Katie I am flailing SO MUCH. SOOO MUCH. I totally agree with your criticisms. I'm not sure Moriarty is just Jim. That seems a bit simple. I'm agreeing with fans who are speculating "Moriarty" is a name of an organisation and the title can be worn by various members/its current leader but it's not just an individual with cronies. I think that would be way more interesting.

Aaaaargh the romance was so strong in this one. My shipper heart has been flailing for an hour and a half. <33333333

I like that idea! And it could work with the whole web-of-crime thing. It did seem like mostly they were playing that very straight though... maybe they'll pull something else out if they get a series. :)

Dude, I have mostly been seeing John as straight and Sherlock as gay asexual, but OMG THE FRANTIC BOMB REMOVAL AT THE END I KIND OF FLAILED AND I DON'T CARE. (And canon Holmes and Watson are basically married, in my head. In the kind of way where they don't always enjoy being married, but they couldn't not be. *loves them so much*)

I see Watson as being very repressed about having any homosexual impulses (army life probably didn't help!), which is why he jokes about it so often I think. And Sherlock might well be asexual... But that doesn't preclude him being monoamorous :)

He is TOTALLY coming over as someone who doesn't want to admit there may be the possibility of attraction there and therefore makes gay jokes. IT'S OKAY WATSON, IT'S 2010, ASK YOUR SISTER. And Sherlock's asexuality in my head is also partly a conscious decision - like, he didn't ever have much interest at all, but he also doesn't really want to have any, so never looked for it. And John being Very Confusing to him in that respect is a story I would love to read. (The other one, where John's all obsessivey but Sherlock's like, well, I do CARE, if I was going to be into anyone it'd be you, but I'm not, and breaks John's heart, would just be too sad, although probably more realistic.)

I also squee'd at the "lost w/o my blogger" -- I love how the show rewards us canon-geeks.

I'm not sure I buy the Moriarty as an organization thing -- but I do think that given they've brought him on so early the intent is not to do a bunch of series of several eps, but probably to wrap it all up in one more series (and I don't think there's anyway there won't be a second series, given the ratings.) And since their one "case of the week" pretty much sucked, I'm OK with that.

Oh, and also there is a guy standing, obviously strung out with nerves and visibly wired to stuff, in the middle of central London for HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS and nobody notices or does anything. At all.

Yes, this. C'mon. In London? No way.

Also, thanks for the fic rec. I also like the idea that Watson's putting in the crappy ninjas.

Aaand apparently season 2 is definite! Not surprised, and hope you're right about the plotting. (I still think they might pull something out of their ass re Moriarty, but given they clearly thought Jim Moriarty worked as a character, maybe not.)

Watson is TOTALLY a fan of ridiculous ninjas. :D
