Awwww young Gen in the kitchens and hiding in the gardens! K not young seeing as it was QoA, but still. And maybe from the way Kamet talks about him, Philo is the same age as Gen was in QoA? He deserved the sand in his food! Who do you think put the sand there? The cook?
I didn't see the twist that "Sandi" was a friend of Gen's, not someone that disliked him or was unhappy with his Kingship.
Also way back in QoA, when Gen was trying to get over his depression and cleaning up his ink quills, I recall in the re-read that he mentions that he owes a scroll to a friend. Is Kamet the friend he was talking about back then? And does that mean MWT know about Kamet and the kitchen scene way back 15 years ago?

Ow, where does he say that? I was looking for hints about Gen knowing Kamet in QoA but I didn't see any. I love how he calls Kamet a friend. They're very alike in certain ways and were really in tune with one another when they were talking. Also, was that part of the reason Gen was praticing his handwriting so much? He promised Kamet a scroll and kinda got fixated on that in his grief?
She definitly planned it 15 years ago. QoA starts with Gen in a servant's uniform. Plus, when Gen was drunk on the parapet, he was thinking about how he jumped from that same parapet at the beginning of QoA and how that gave him an idea of what to do with Costis. 0_o That's what SET UP looks like, my friends. They also talk about the Mede ships as far back as QoA. Kamet even mentions ships.
TaT was orginally going to be the second half of KoA before KoA turned into its own book and Sophos got in the way. So, when she wrote QoA she was planning for us to see Kamet again in the next book, but see how our carefully laid plans go astray?

That's the thing about MWT's writing. You never know which details (however seemingly minor) are significant until 15 years down the road, and 2 or 3 or 4 books later! O_O

I would bet actual money that she did know about Kamet and the kitchen scene and did have it planned. That's one of the things I like so much about the series and the individual books -- MWT plays absolutely fair, and if you don't get something, that's on you, not on her.
I think that's why these books take so long to write, because she's working so hard to make sure everything is set up correctly for later and also consistent with what went before, not to mention internally consistent and wrapped up within each book. (I would also bet actual money that when the final book comes out, we will all go back to re-read The Thief and go "Oh my gosh, look at that! I should have known it all along!")

I didn't see the twist that "Sandi" was a friend of Gen's, not someone that disliked him or was unhappy with his Kingship.
Not unhappy with his kingship, but very likely unhappy about the way he treated them. He deceived them, snuck around the palace and kitchens, lied to them, and then disappeared. Then, he comes back as king and doesn't even come visit them to make amends. No wonder she boxed his ears.
But it does explain why he didn't want the kicthens purged.
Interesting. I had a different take on it; I thought that the kitchen staff never new their new King was the same boy they knew years before and that was why he got sand in his food, and they learned only after the revelation to Kamet. He got his ear pulled by the cook (that scene where he kept rubbing his ear), so I thought that was her taking her vengeance out for him not telling them the truth all this time.
I suppose the reason he would keep it secret is....it's Gen, and he knows any of these secrets can be used by him someday.

That was my impression too!
I wonder if the kitchen staff sent to deliver food are usually the newest, least important ones who aren't really trained very well in more essential things like cooking. (Kamet himself doesn't recognize any of the staff who deliver him food.) And that's why the older ones who had been around when Gen was a regular there, never got the chance to see and recognize Gen (not to mention they all looked down on the new Attolis, and would have avoided having to serve him personally!)
