Ok....so let's talk about the queen's miscarriage. Or was it? This is what jumped out at me from skimming the thread of the Jamey Dodger Society. What if they FAKED the miscarriage, and sent their child away to be raised elsewhere in safety? This would (as mentioned in JDS) explain Costis leaving for a while, AND it could explain who Her Highness Gitta KINGSDAUGHTER is on the map.

I did think that Gitta Kingsdaughter was an odd detail - but is it possible she's from the northmost country that they mentioned at the end of the book? It doesn't really seem like Attolian naming conventions that we've seen, and I was originally thinking she might be Medean.

I'm thinking that I saw in an interview, or else that MWT said at the King's English book talk that Gitta Kingsdaughter isn't going to be a significant character, although her full story came to Megan as the map was being made. I sort of assumed that she was a daughter of a northern king because in the real world, that is a naming convention of northern countries.
Kamet signs his letter Kamet 'you are annux', so apparently that is what they call him in Attolia. But there are plenty of other languages being spoken by these characters, and it's not clear what language Kamet wrote his account in. I couldn't help wondering if Namikus was another form of "King Namer." Kamet would certainly be a good person to hire as a tutor to a princess.

I have very mixed feelings. On the one hand, this kind of crazy switcheroo is exactly the kind of thing Gen (and Megan) would do. It was an advanced pregnancy by all appearances, and Irene could certainly have been ill after the birth. With Costis's Totally Not Suspicious Trip To See His Family, my suspicions are indeed raised

I agree. Much as I wish it was a fake, I think it unlikely. Sometimes MWT writes that which is not what it seems, but other times there is real pain. Pol does die. Gen does lose his hand. Etc, etc... I'm, sadly, thinking this is the case here... :'(

Yes, and I don't *think* Megan has ever tricked us in that way--making us feel real pain with the characters and then saying, "never mind, ha, that wasn't real!"
The miscarriage binds us even more to Irene and all she's been through. That part was so incredibly touching, especially knowing how much harder it is for them to rule, with Irene's recovery, the distraction that the tragedy has on everyone, and not having an heir.
Re: Chapter ThirteenibmillerMay 17 2017, 05:15:09 UTC
I was very moved by the miscarriage. It was kind of a gut punch. I still didn't get as much Irene as my selfish little heart wanted, but the Irene I got was Top Quality, as always - but not taken for granted.

I agree! Honestly, it was the only real "shock" I got out of the book. I saw all of the other "surprises" coming, but not that one. I had to reread the passage three times to believe it.
Re: Chapter ThirteenreadsintreesMay 17 2017, 16:02:05 UTC
I knew Nahuseresh was alive the whole book. I kept waiting for a second witness to show up to confirm his death, and when that did not happen I was sure he was alive. I still don't exactly understand why Costis was not told about the deception. Except that Costis can not lie, and Kamet would figure it out before he arrived in Attolia. But for pretty much the whole book I assumed that Costis was in on the deception.
I kind of expected a bigger reaction (aka panic attack) from Kamet when he found out. But when Kamet contemplated the idea that he would have abandoned Nahuseresh but would not abandon Costis (when he was ill) it was apparent that Kamet's ties with the Mede nation were pretty well severed already.

I swear my heart stopped for a second when Costis thought Irene had died. It came out of nowhere and made me realize just how fond I've grown of her as a character.
