Is it just me or was there something...romantic between Costis and Kemet? The book kind of left me with the image of them living together by the sea and it just all seemed so...domestic?

I know! There's a really strong bond there and definitely love. Whether that turns into romantic love we'll have to see. All I know is that I definitely ship them!

I know, I ship them too! I love Costis for his obstinate honourableness and I adored how defensive Kamet got about him (not just his intelligence). Eugenides was right --- he was the exact right person to send to "steal" someone like Kamet.
There is love for sure, but I guess --- I can't imagine uprooting my life for a friend? I'm not sure if that comes across the way I mean it to, but I think about how much of Costis's identity in KOA was wrapped up in being part of the Guard and all those hints about him being prepped as a successor to Teleus and his love for the queen (and king too). I just can't imagine anything other "the one" love could supersede all his other attachments. And Kamet kept mentioning how good-looking he was too. ;)

I thought there was at least a hint that Costis and Kamet were going to be part of Attolis's spy network to watch the Mede on the border. As well as Costis being too much in danger in Attolia proper?
Not that it precludes shipping, but that's how I read it.
RE: Re: Chapter ThirteenninedaysaqueenMay 16 2017, 16:21:27 UTC
I agree with ibmiller that Costis didn't go with Kamet just for Kamet, though he clearly wanted to go with him. :)
He was detached from the Guard in KoA, and I'm guessing the palace still isn't safe for him. So, he was probably already going to be sent somewhere else to continue his spy career and Gen suggested he go with Kamet to help watch for ships coming towards Attolia.
I was joking with Danny Baily how you should read the book and take a shot every time Kamet mentions how buff or skilled Costis is. You'd need a lot of alcohol. XD

Lol, Kamet deserves the title honorary reprobate added to his name.
So is the plans for Costis to be the next Captain if the guard over? Or is he just being sent to aquire some life wisdom outside of his small farm life and life in the guard so that he will be a more knowledgable captain?
RE: Re: Chapter ThirteenninedaysaqueenMay 17 2017, 00:11:29 UTC
I thought Captain of the Guard was more an adolescent dream of Costis's and not really a real plan any sorts. Anyways, he's way too young to be captain just yet.

Aah! Sweet connection.
Next time I reread, I think I'll try to track Costis's experience of their excursion. He seems the same (as in KoA) in many ways, but he also grows/learns/changes, as you point out.

I was a little surprised that Costis was shipped off to the country by Gen, but then I considered how stressed Costis seemed in the palace in KoA, so perhaps he does like the idea of not being in the middle of the action at this point.

When those nasty assassins struck in KoA Costis really proved himself as a quick thinker and he certainly kept his head about him. Everything from figuring out about the dogs let out into the courtyard as a distraction, to catching Irene when she fainted. Maybe that's when Gen knew he'd be the perfect person to fetch Kamet. Plus, he's so darn likable that Kamet kept finding reasons not to escape, and quickly came to like and respect our boy Costis.
Plus, he's so buff and brawny. Like those HeftyHeftyHefty commercials.

Maybe Captain of the Guard is no longer something Costis dreams of.

That's just like Kamet. There's my Attolia and then there's all those OTHER Attolians.
