So, why were Costis's words "knife-edged" when they were walking to the caravan? Kamet seems to assume it's because he was being "indiscreet" but I thought maybe Costis was getting wind of his plans to escape or annoyed at being underestimated.

He waited till Kamet fell asleep to sleep himself but then leaves Kamet by himself in the morning which is a little odd, since I can now tell he's keeping a close eye on his charge.

I'm not sure about the leaving Kamet alone, either. He had to have considered that Kamet might be planning on slipping away. It's odd that Kamet overslept, though. You don't suppose he'd drugged the wine or something, do you?

I think the words were knife-edged because Kamet wasn't hiding his contempt for Costis's ability to come up with a decent plan. ("whatever he had in his head that approximated thoughts," "gods alone knew what he might be doing to give us away," and "gods, I asked, how stupid was he?" are all on or near that page) But Costis had an excellent plan. Kamet even thinks "I had been indiscreet. He had seen what I had been thinking."

Drugging him was a possibility I considered since Kamet was surprised he not only overslept but failed to wake up when Costis got up. However, that doesn't seem like something Costis would do to someone who is obviously already being abused--looks like a "watermelon" and has visible flogging scars.

Perhaps, Costis is just very quiet and Kamet felt safer than he has in awhile, thus slept heavily? Mostly, I think Costis thought Kamet wanted to be free and that Costis was his best chance of getting out. So, logically it does make sense...? Re-reading it, Costis is definitely keeping on eye on him. It does seem that leaving Kamet alone was a risk Costis had to take because it was easier for him to set up the decoy alone.

Ah, I see! That makes more sense. I was wondering what thoughts Costis was reading. The escape plans or the insults to his intelligence? I thought, at first, Kamet was thinking his anger was caused by him pointing out they were going in the wrong direction, and I know Costis wouldn't be angry about that.

"By far the most eloquent non-speaker I have ever seen." XD My fav description of Costis so far.

Hey, he even has a rich uncle!

"Not the fool you took me for?" AHAHAAH! You go, Costis!

Is it just me or does Kamet use "master" as an insult?

"We all spend our time under the sign of the idiot." Well, Costis would know a thing or two about that!

"The caravan was going to be safe, even if I was one of the people responsible for protecting it." LOLOLOLOLOLO You need to pump some iron Kamet! XD
