I love how Kamet's first thought is--I hope they don't remember that time I started that fire... XD

It would be uncivil to beat me to death but maybe he didn't know that. They are very uncivil. Such little faith, Kamet! LOLOLOLO

I also love that even though he is clearly scared, he's still like--his Mede is terrible. Such a little grammar Nazi.

Kamet's voice and cultural evolution is fascinating. And somewhat endearing.

I love Kamet so much! I can't even... He's so sassy! His trend of falling back on grammar in stressful situations is hilarious.

He's such a particular person about everything, but not fussy at the same time. I really love him too!

He is very particular! I kinda am too. We also adore Costis and miss him when he's gone, but that's almost everyone. XD

It was so good to be back in the world of Attolia - but this story, much as it felt a bit like Eagle of the Ninth as others have mentioned (and I'm planning on rereading Eagle today), also felt a lot like The Horse and His Boy - both in civilization (Calormen vs Medean) and the runaway slave narrative. Anyone else feel that?

Yes, I was very much reminded of The Horse and His Boy too, with Kamet so often sounding like Shasta with no idea how non-slave, non-Caloremen/Medean society operates

*arriving late to the party*

Did somebody say The Horse and His Boy?!

It is very different, but in many ways, it feels like a more mature version of The Thief with higher stakes. The resemblance to Eagle of the Ninth is also unmistakable. I never actually read Horse and His Boy, so I can't comment on that! :)

That's a great point - the quest narrative with misfit companions is definitely a similarity.

I whole-heartedly recommend Horse and His Boy! It definitely feels like TaT in more than just one way... ;)

Who get on each another's nerves but ultimately become best friends with a great deal of respect for one another?

I've read most the Narnia books but not that one. I should!

TaT also reminds me of the Squire's Tales in some ways. Costis and Kamet, when they were arguing, sounded just like Terence and Gawain.

Oh, my, Horse and His Boy and Silver Chair (probably not coincidentally, both the most focused and completely plotted quest narratives of the series) vie for my favorite of the seven in my heart. :)

There is definitely some growing friendship going on - though it's four-way, not two way, since there are four main characters in Horse and His Boy.

I haven't read Squire's Tale in a long, long time. I should see if I can find a copy.
