In the Jewish tradition "sitting shiva" is when members of the temple, family, and friends visit the house of someone mourning the death of their father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister or spouse. it usually lasts for seven days and there is a short service at night, but my mother only wanted to do it one night. my grandmother passed away on ( Read more... )

I just sat Shiva about 2 weeks ago. We had it at my house. I'm catholic so it was definitley interesting but I kind of liked it. The grave site service was rough though b/c we had to watch them bury my Grandfather.

Home hasn't been home for a while now. But that was something I won't forget. - same here.

im not sure which one is worse... going to a wake and seeing the dead body in the casket or the jewish funeral watching the coffin go into the ground and having to put dirt on it. Both are very sad and hard things to do but i think they also both provide something like closure or atleast a lasting image that makes it final.
