[L isn't really much of one for parties... but he understands that the Watch is hosting this one. It seems like a perfectly good opportunity to learn a bit more about it, even if he's not particularly well-suited for the more strenuous aspects of the organization. Mello had mentioned that they were on the "front lines", for instance, in the event of an attack on the city. If that happened and L actually joined, he'd be a liability rather than helpful to the cause.

He's here, looking out-of-place the way only L can. He's unique, actually, simply because no matter where he is, he never seems to actually belong. He's near the wall, sipping punch and holding a fistful of cookies, seeming fairly content, but even though he's not making a production out of it, he's definitely watching the people walking by very carefully.]

[It's really the same way to L; he is aware of who Roy Mustang is, and has in fact discussed the man with the other young detectives from his own world. He's acquired some respect for the man based on reputation alone. But they've never spoken at great length, and L wants to see if he really deserves that respect.]

[The New Year's passed and most people are beginning to look toward the door, intent on heading home and sleeping off the effects of alcohol for the evening. Neji passes between small gatherings of people, picking up discarded plates, cups, napkins and utensils as he goes.

He looks about as tired as everyone else, having woken up for early morning training, an evening patrol shift, and then a late-night party. He's certainly looking forward to retiring to his own bed soon]
