This surprised even Cheshire, who had grown quite used to the more controlled physics here, even though his body seemed to regularly defy those rules.
He wasn't about to complain though. He was working on getting Blair a present, since it was just the sort of thing that needed to wait until last minute.
Carefully he creeped his way across the top of the snow until he was close enough to pounce at the bird. It slipped through his paws (since he tried to catch it as if he had hands he ended up deep into the snow on his chest empty pawed,) but only fluttered a few feet away. Determined, Cheshire jumped back out and started the hunting process again with no more than a quick glance and a wider smile flashed at his audience.

Under normal circumstances, it might have been a difficult decision whether or not to interrupt the hunt. As much as Paine didn't want the bird to die, cats hunting birds was just what cats did. But there was something in the way the cat looked at her just now.... Cats don't usually smile like that.
She took a step forward, and bird fluttered away a little, still denying its own run for freedom. Paine shrugged a little. Can't chase away what doesn't want to be chased. So she spoke to the cat, "You're a guest here?"
