Although Sano had not heard the words Kaoru muttered to herself a few moments prior to his arrival, he had definitely heard the sobs of the familiar figure walking along the streets of Death City. One thing Sano could never stand was seeing a woman cry. It was only worse seeing that this was someone that he was close to. Someone he cared about. Yet at the same time, part of him understood how she came to this state. If yesterday's talk wasn't a telltale sign of sorts, this was.

He made his way over to the porch, leaning back against the same wall Kaoru was on. "What would Kenshin say if he saw you looking like that right now?"

Kaoru jumped, looking up with swollen eyes. "Sano? " She hated how her voice trembled slightly, as she lowered her eyes. The words, the question was a blow. A truthful blow.

"He'd suffer more--more than he already is. " She wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve, trying to pull herself together. "I told myself when I went to Kyoto that I wouldn't whine or complain, and here I am again being selfish..." She smiled sadly down at her hands.

"I had no idea..that was the source of his scar. " Tears began to spill onto her hands. "..That Kenshin has gone through so much pain--what can I possibly do for him, Sanosuke..--now that his.." She swallowed. "Wife is here--I'm not so sure. That look on his face.."

He leaned back against the wall, his eyes not moving to look at his friend in the state she was in. It was hard to look and listen to her sobs. Sano chewed on the fishbone in his mouth in an attempt to distract him from looking at the girl through his peripherals.

"This was a huge blow to him." He paused, considering his words carefully. None of them had expected something like this. And to think landing in Death City was already disorienting as is. Add something like this into the equation and there was no doubt that things would become a lot messier than any of them could've guessed. "To both of us too, learning about his past like that."

There was just so much to take in over a short period of time. He wasn't even sure if their experiences in Kyoto could even compare.

Unfortunately Kaoru was still reigning her tears in, her heart hadn't felt this heavy since, well, she lived alone. And not just for the complexity of the situation, but for Kenshin himself. It all was so sad, heartwrenching. Putting these trials and losses on the shoulders of Kenshin's smiling face in her mind only made the tears fall harder, a brief sniff as she closed her eyes.

"...Why would they do something like that? How cruel--..not just for him, but for Tomoe-san." Another quiet sob, as she shook her head. She'd be lying if she said learning that the woman Kenshin had been in love with when she herself was only just aware of the feelings that had been there for such a long time in herself was here, wasn't a huge, if not crippling blow ( ... )
