"...Why would they do something like that? How cruel--..not just for him, but for Tomoe-san." Another quiet sob, as she shook her head. She'd be lying if she said learning that the woman Kenshin had been in love with when she herself was only just aware of the feelings that had been there for such a long time in herself was here, wasn't a huge, if not crippling blow.
When she piled up all the things Tomoe-san was so good at, or her beauty as she imagined it to be, she could only spiral into self-deprecation.
"..he said that I welcomed him back, after Shishio. He looked really happy, Sanosuke. I know Kenshin doesn't want to burden us with things but in that moment I didn't see anything but that. And now--" She looked at him with watery eyes.
"We can't let him possibly bear that burden all by himself---but I'm.." She swallowed. "I'm afraid. To...see her."

What seemed hard to imagine was how one thing seemed to happen after another since then. Winding up in Death City, finding out about this war of theirs, Kenshin's dead wife returning from the dead, so to speak. There was a lot of things on Kenshin's plate. On all of theirs. And they all had to deal with all of it somehow. And Kenshin had to know that they were all together with him on this.
"I'll try to talk to him alone. Knock some sense into him if I need to," he said, shrugging his shoulders slightly. Even if he was used to how Kenshin handled things at times, he wasn't going to let all the weight rest on his friend's shoulders alone. Especially now that they knew what it was that was bothering him.
The whole idea of meeting someone like that, dead or alive was awkward and off-putting. All Sano could do was scratch at the side of his face as he thought about it. "We'll probably have to eventually."
