It was even more obvious in person that Mary knew something was wrong. She opened the door with a wide-eyed expression before she remembered to put on her smiling mask. She seemed a little too-light in her actions too, as if not completely committing to even opening the door.

"Doctor Watson! Thank you for coming. Please, come in!" She gestured into the apartment, her heart beating hard enough she could feel it.

To him, who was attempting to be as sensitive to the girl as he could manage, it seemed that Mary Weather knew all. But he forged on with a determination to let the information come at a time of both their choosing -- Watson entered the room with a polite nod.

"Thank you for accepting me on such late notice," he said, going to the kitchen to deposit the things he had brought there for her. The pot, some tea, and some fruit. "Have you managed to acquire all that you need? I have here some items that you may find useful, if more difficult to find."

It was not Watson's fault that the girl had far too much experience in the world, or that her usual demeanour made people forget all she had seen, if they knew in the first place. Nor was it his fault that Mary was unusually perceptive or good at putting things together.

She was doing her best to act normal. She smiled, "How kind of you! Yes, I believe I have all I need for a few days. I will eventually need a pot, and maybe another piece or two of cookware, but I can manage with a skillet until then."

There was even a crate by the sink that gave her enough of a height boost to be able to more easily reach the sink, and would make using the stove manageable. She followed him into the kitchen, moving the fruits into the now-empty SEES basket.

"You may have this one," he said lamely, gesturing to the pot that he had brought. Watson felt a little ill at the prospect of disappointing this young girl, but he recognized the feel as dread of conveying bad news to others. As a doctor, he had enough experience of it.

"Are you certain that you should be living alone, however? It seems too much for a young lady," Watson ventured to add, hoping that he did not offend. In their time, it was not common for young ladies of breeding to have to tend for themselves, after all.
