It was very unusual to see Gai laid up. While he got injured from time to time, it had been a while since he'd been down enough that he'd stayed put in a clinic. The combination of exhaustion from using up all of his chakra reserves, combined with the agony had Gai staying put for just a little bit. Not long. At all. He would be out of here soon.

But Lee was here! So not all would be dark! The door opened and Gai looked up to see his student and greet Lee with a huge grin. The grin switched suddenly to a grimace as he was embraced. That hurt, a great deal. Of course, Gai didn't want Lee to know that, so he continued beaming with a much paler face than normal. "Lee! My student!" His voice was a little hoarse, another sign of the pain. But that didn't stop him from hugging back. Some pain was worth it.

Lee buried his face against his teacher's shoulder, the feel of the stretchy jumpsuit familiar against his cheek. He hugged tighter, unwilling to let go. It'd been so very long since he'd seen Gai- two increasingly confusing months where Lee's world had been shaken to the point where he didn't know up from down anymore, and now, with Gai here, it felt like things finally made sense. "I have missed you so very much," Lee repeated.

Gai rubbed Lee's back, enjoying the warmth despite the pain. There were few things as pleasant as a hug. When it was a hug from his most beloved student it was even better, and it sounded like Lee needed one. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to stay away from you. I am here now, and I'm not going away. I am here for you."

"It has been so very confusing and I have tried to do what is right and I do not know what is right any more or what I am supposed to do and I am so very glad that you are here." The words were mumbled against Gai's shoulder, muffled by muscle and spandex. Lee burrowed in closer.
