Consuming five kishin eggs souls really did have an interesting affect on a person. It was, all around, one of the strangest things Heine had ever felt in his life and he had said as much to his partner a short while after the fact.
Heine definitely felt different; It wasn't so discrete as instantly feeling an increase in strength like he'd be able to suddenly lift more physically, or slice through thicker objects whilst in his weapon form, but instead it was more like an increase in energy, in drive and in motivation. He felt stronger, just not in the ways he'd be expecting to. This had been clear from the first time the two of them had trained together after Heine had consumed the souls. The white-haired weapon felt more awake more quickly, more alert, and more prepared to work with his Meister.
But there had been something else as well. Two days after Heine had eaten the souls there had been a particular conversation--an exchange about how souls tasted.
Heine remembered describing the taste of them--or rather, expelling the idea that souls had a taste. They didn't: they had a feel. A good feeling at that. Especially at the back of the throat as they went down.
And then he remembered there had been an awkward silence, a heaviness in the air and something Heine couldn't put his finger on. Kanda had this strange look on his face, though it both appeared and vanished in a mere second. That was all it took though, and from then Heine just knew things weren't right, especially since Kanda had excused himself very shortly after that and vanished into the bathroom.
But it hadn't really been that big a deal, right? It wasn't anything major at all. Yeah, it had sounded stranger out-loud than it had done in his head, but that kind of thing happened all the time, didn't it? It certainly wasn't the dumbest thing he'd ever said, not even close.
So why couldn't he get the expression that had appeared on Kanda's face out of his head? Why was that look stuck on repeat in Heine's mind?
Their morning training session together after that particular conversation and Heine had been off his game from the get-go. He tried to push the memory of that look on Kanda's face out of his mind for the umpteenth time that morning, trying instead to focus on their training and the wavelength between the two of them, but it just kept coming back. That look. What the hell was that look?!
