Kanda heard what Heine said, and he felt what he felt: the raveling around the edges of their resonance. But he didn't stop at once. It didn't come naturally to him, backing off like that. His reflex was to refuse, to grit his teeth and dig in his heels and fight with everything he had to stop the seams from coming apart ( ... )

Stubbornness really was all well and good for a solo-fighter, but this was different. This wasn't even as simple as the two of them fighting as a team; It was always about them fighting as one. Kanda's determination to push on did very little for Heine's security in the resonance.

When Kanda came to a stop it was just about a second before Heine would have been ready to yell at him for a second time, but the bump against the wall shook the wavelength between them into further disarray.

They had both clearly had enough.

Kanda's choice to release Heine in that moment had been a good one; He couldn't hold himself together in his weapon form anymore.

The blades and chain twisted and reformed into his human shape once more as he stood with his back facing his partner. His head was angled in a way that obscured his eyes behind the pure white of his hair, his hands were shoved deeply into his pockets and his shoulders were hunched high with his head lower. It didn't take any kind of a genius to tell that Heine was far from content.

Whatever it was that Heine had intended to convey by his turned back, it was not what Kanda took from the posture. His free hand rubbing the pain from his shoulder, he turned to look at his partner, that single muttered syllable like a fist clenching in the base of his chest ( ... )
