[ The first recording comes mid-day, amidst the clamour that can only be associated with large, milling, and largely confused crowds. The audio is little more than a jumble of noise, of fumbling and the clatter of keys; the visual feed is no less confusing. There's the image of a corridor, milling newcomers, and it ends as the camera settles to ( Read more... )

[Owner of said room just so happened to be out grabbing a pack of smokes, some energy drinks and a new game from the mall. And what does he come back to? Someone in his room.

Several facts keep him calm about this. He doesn't have a gun on him, the kid looks like one of those trolls he's seen Jade and the others talking to sometimes, and he really doesn't seem to be doing much harm.

So Matt just raises a brow as he sets his bag down on the kitchen counter.]

You know, normally you're not supposed to enter someone's apartment without permission.

Only a week or so. I haven't been spending as much time on it lately because I came to the conclusion the technology here isn't fit for it and I'm not sure where I can get info on magic the witches use without someone at Shibusen getting suspicious over something stupid.

Jutht make do with what you have.

[ His voice is growing distracted, a little more distant the closer he gets to the screen, until he's simply sitting before the little table, head tilted just so.

It's almost archaic, but it's working. That's all that matters, isn't it? ]

Ith magic prohibited here?

Yeah, I guess we could try.

[Matt's starting to get a hunch about this kid, and figures this is probably the best way to get him to calm the hell down fully.]

Sort of. You heard about the war, right? Well the enemy are witches who use magic. I don't know much about it myself personally though.

[He moves a bit closer, just enough so he'd be able to see the screen himself as well.]

Even if we could get it with some sort of technology, it wouldn't be anything we'd be able to get our hands on in the city.

[ He's hardly paying attention by that point; it's just a matter of filing away what he hears for later, old tricks perfected by his sweeps of distraction. ]

Can't you do like offithe work? Thubmit formth and all that thhit.

[ And he's leaning forward, skimming through whatever's there, only a second's pause before he begins tapping at that keyboard.

The language feels different, and yet... not as much. Another thought to save for later. ]

[Yeah, his feeling was right. But that's not what matters right now. Matt finds himself next to the laptop to see what the kid's typing.]

Didn't think about that, but I guess I could bug Kid or one of the others about it and see if they know anything useful we could use.

[ He's too busy typing to notice, adjustments here, something of a formula there. Working from scratch would have been a pain, but at least with something of a foundation set out-- ]

Whatever went behind the communicatorth could be applied to anything elthe. It'th amazing an entire fucking thpecieth could function without a thyllade--

[ It's only then that he takes note of that distance closed, the voice originating from almost right next to him, and it's then that he scrambles back. It's not as smooth as intended; he hits his knee on the coffee table in the motion of rising, and instead of slipping out of arm's reach as planned, he goes down in a rather graceless heap at the foot of the couch.

God damn it. ]

[And Matt automatically takes a step back, hiding the slight amusement and showing a bit more of the actual concern.]

Chill out, I won't do anything. You okay?

Jutht thtay over there--

[ Kicking out a little, scrambling to push himself into a sitting position, even as he snaps his hand out, groping blindly for fallen glasses. He knows he's freaking out, flipping shit that could do just as well unflipped, but it doesn't change matters much. ]

Back!

[Matt gives a shrug and moves back to the kitchen to sit on the counter. Yeah, it's his own apartment but he'd feel bad kicking the kid out when he's so worked up like this. Hell, if he got this way over one person running into two in the halls would probably make him lose it.]

Alright alright, just relax. I told you, I'm not dangerous you know.

[ Calm, rational logic dictated that Everything Was All Right; he was in one piece, a vast majority of his friends were present, the sun was bright but not lethal, he had his own room somewhere ten floor below, and he was sitting in a room chock-full of this world's technology and games.

Simple hysteria seemed to have the upper-hand over that rational voice. Damned if he could help it. ]

Thorry. Jutht. Thtay over there.

[ What kind of an idiot was he coming of as? He didn't really want to think on that. ]

Sure. Wanna tell me your name at least?

[If there's one thing Matt's never bothered getting rid of, it's his curiosity. Probably the biggest reason he hasn't kicked the kid out yet. And he doesn't think this one would be the type to take to being called 'kid' very kindly.]

[ Frustration flickers across his face before he replaces his glasses, edging back to the table to retrieve his communicator. A moment of typing, the tilt of his head, before he offers it up, holding it out to the other, silent invite to approach: ]

Sollux, huh? Alright.

[Yeah, if the earlier attitude didn't confirm it then the typing thing definitely did.]

You know, there's nothing wrong with the way you talk. You could have just said it and I would have understood.
