[The door opens right when the clock striked 10:30:00 AM. Azusa walks in carrying a stack of paper and books, stacked in an organized fashion and sets them on the desk. Taking part of the stack, she passes them to her students without missing a beat. Once she is done, she walks to the center of the room and claps her hands to gain their ( Read more... )

It had been a very long time since he had been in any sort of school setup. It was a little nostalgic, and very strange.

Nonetheless, Roy understood that it had to be done.

[She approaches the board and writes in a quick and neat line. The writing on the board reads:

A sound soul resides within a sound mind and sound body. Afterwards, she turns around and faces the class once more.]

This is the mantra of Shibusen. It is imperative to know the meaning of this sentence and why we live by it. So here's a question for all of you. What do you think this means?

[Hasn't passed out yet but he certainly looks close to it. He's propping his head up with his palm.]

Uh, dunno like. Souls are important and you can't have a good soul unless you've got a good mind and body?

[Go ahead, fall asleep. SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO.]

In simple terms, that is correct. What else?

[What else. Manages to sit up a bit and actually look like he's thinking.]

...

Uhh. And you can't get that without lots of training? Oh, and eating people is bad.

The lessons seemed.... valuable enough. More like confirmations of what he had figured out on his own than anything new, but that, in itself, was a good thing.

Roy didn't participate all that much, as he was content with listening and watching his classmates. He might have seemed like a strange sight in a setup like theirs, but there were older (and stranger) ones for observers to ponder at.

[Nanako was trying to pay attention in class but so much of this was flying right over her head...She turned to look at Mr. Mustang who seemed to understand what the teacher was talking about...

Hm. She was going to try harder.]

[ Dancing? Singing? Dissecting? Dojima knew it was best all around not to question the whys for such forewarnings. Most laws were put in place, after all, to cease the continuation of certain, disrupting activities. Hrm.

So he sat, and he watched, and he kept himself from reaching for the cigarettes in his shirt pocket time and time again. A learning experience. Yeah. If anything, he was really just there for Nanako's sake. Not to glean what he could from discussion. Of course not. ]

[And a lot of lecture DID explain a few things...

...Was it just his imagination, or was someone watching him? Roy turned, trying to pinpoint who it was. His one good eye eventually landed on Nanako.]

Is something the matter?

We aim to have a sound body and sound mind in shibusen. Why is that? As the monkey student explained, "you can't have a good soul unless you've got a good mind and body". Without it, your soul becomes lost, and it is much easier to fall into a state of madness or become a kishin.

First off, madness is the "disease" of a soul. It is a contagious disease that destroys the mind to the point where you lose all of your senses. You literally become mad. Having a strong heart and courage gives you a stronger resistance to this madness.

When your soul has become so corrupt, you start to desire to eat pure, human souls. Once this happens, you end up becoming a kishin, the epitome of madness.

Huh. Then wouldn't insanity be the corruption of the mind, not the soul? [Have a hand raised from this corner of the room.]

Right. However, since having a sound mind will create a sound soul, a corrupt mind will also create a corrupt soul.
