[The feed begins with Derek still fiddling with the device, his face betraying a fair amount of worry.]

This should... Ah! Got it! ... I think.

[He stands straighter now and takes a deep breath before beginning to speak again. An awkward smile crosses his face as he rubs the back of his head.]

I... guess that I should start this with a "hello," so ( Read more... )

[Oh, well, this is interesting. And it's about time, she thinks, if BREW saw fit to bring her here months ago.]

Nobody from Caduceus is here, but there are a few faces you should recognize nevertheless. It's been a while, Doctor Stiles.

[Not a face that he expected to see, but a welcome one nonetheless. His smile is very friendly, although there is definitely surprise on his face.]

Dr. Kimishima? Is that... really you?

Yes, it certainly has. Far too long. How have you been? How long have you been here?

[She laughs.]

Yes, it's me. I've been fine. I was taken here about five months ago, and have remained here since. There's no way to get word back home, but supposedly time doesn't pass while we're here--or so the reports say.

Gabe's here too, by the way. On that note...what date is it, the last you remember? BREW's been shown to have the ability to reach across time as well.

[He smiles with distinct fondness at her.]

I see. Well, I'm very happy to see you and I'm very glad that you've been doing well.

Time doesn't pass? Strange, but good I suppose. At least no one will be put off by my rather sudden absence. It would have been nice if they'd asked first though. This is all rather jarring.

[Today is clearly a day for surprises. His face reflects his shock at the unexpected news, but it's replaced quickly with that fond smile again.]

Gabe's here? That's... a surprise. I haven't had the opportunity to see him much recently either with things as they were. And he's doing well too?

[Now he just looks confused.]

... Reach across time? How could... I suppose that I really shouldn't be questioning something which managed to grab me straight out of my life the way that it did.

It was late in the year of 2021. ... Isn't that when you're from too?

[Courtney is randomly playing with her communicator when she comes across Derek's message.]

A way to contact home would be nice. My uncle must be looking for me.

[Derek smiles cheerfully at the new face.]

Hello there!

Yes, that would definitely be handy. Apparently, time doesn't pass at home in the time we spend here though, which still seems odd to me, but I can't see a reason to doubt the information given that the source is a trusted friend of mine. Something with the timelines must be different.

So, hopefully that means that our friends and loved ones won't be worried.

Are you new here too?

Yeah, I just got here.

I was kind of hoping Uncle A would find a way to rescue me, but if time doesn't pass I guess even he can't reach me here.

Ah, I see. I'm very sorry that you're disappointed.

We'll all just have to take care of one another and do our best to get through this. It'll be fine if we stay focused on the task at hand and work together.

May I ask your name?

I'm pretty sure there are no ways of contacting people back home, de arimasu. That would completely go against the point of an alternate-universe plot, de arimasu.

Alternate-universe... plot? What do you mean?

[There is a very, very confused look on his face.]

[Here, have a rather patronizing are-you-serious look in reply.]

An alternate-universe plot, de arimasu. The protagonist gets transported to a different world with no means of communication, and usually no friends, de arimasu. Then they're tasked with saving the world they land in, while trying to find a way home, de arimasu.

[Derek blinks, looking no more enlightened then he was a second ago.]

This... isn't that though. ... Is it?

And what does "de arimasu" mean?

I love it when surgeons say phrases like "to be precise." It makes my day that much happier.

Wait. Huh?

[There's silence for another couple of moments as he further considers the subject. There's a soft chuckle in the background as understanding dawns on him.]

Well, it is important for a surgeon to be precise. I don't think that you'd want to go see one who wasn't.

It's a pleasure to meet you. May I ask your name?

I'd have no problem seeing one. I'd just not like to be on the business end of their scalpel.

You may...

[Another soft chuckle can be heard.]

You like to play with words, don't you?

A-Alright then, what's your name? As you probably already know from my message, I'm Derek Stiles.

My name is Tsuruhime, Dr. Stiles.

I-I hope it's not too hard to pronounce?

I'll learn to say it properly no matter what, Miss Tsuruhime. ... Did I pronounce your name correctly? I'll practice as much as I need to so that I can say it in the right way. It's important.
