[Karen had always felt drawn to fire. She sat near to the bonfire and watched the flames dance. She tried to remember how it felt to have the flames actually on her palm. It would probably be harmful to her if she tried to do so at this very moment.

She smiled. How would she tell this strange story to the people back home? Because she was going to get home. She wasn't sure how she knew. Women's intuition, maybe.]

[he wandered over because he, too, was alone at the festival. oh, certainly there were people he was acquainted with around, but Choushiro could recognize the earmarks of a solitary creature when he saw one.

that, perhaps, was why he moved near her and offered a steaming cup of cocoa to her eye level without sitting down, a kind smile on his face. he had another in his opposite hand for himself.]

[She lifts her head and returns his smile.]

Thank you.

[She takes the cup.]

You look like a woman with a lot on her mind.

[he offers by way of opening the conversation, though he still hasn't sat down. it would be impolite, even if just this gesture was remarkably forward.]

[That sounded a lot like a pick up line. She wonders if he knew that.]

I'm just feeling a bit homesick. That's all.

Won't you sit down, sir?

[moonlighttag]

[it's unconscious, really. but at her invitation, he seats himself in the open space next to her, taking his time and sighing softly when he's settled.]

Was Christmas a large affair where you're from?

[fireplaying]

It's more of an event for friends and lovers. We get the occasional sad and lonely customer, but it's not really that different from other days.

And you, sir? I have a feeling that we're from a similar place.

[moonlighttag]

[he notices her word choice, but decides to let it slide for the time being, quietly filing it away for future inquiries.]

It depends on where you go, I think. The New Years festival is always much larger.

[fireplaying]

New Years huh...

[It's strange, knowing that there might never be a next New Years in her world. But it's not something she'd want people to worry about so she's just going to take a sip of her cocoa.]

[moonlighttag]

[Choushiro, on the other hand, continues cradling his beverage, keeping his hands warm.]

I wonder what it will be like here...

[fireplaying]

I'm not entirely sure, but I'd be thankful just to witness the start of a new year.

[moonlighttag]

[his head lifts, and he looks at her fully for probably the first time. he wants to ask, but it's something of an awkward question.]

Are you...?

[fireplaying]

[She turns her head to meet his gaze. Whatever it was that he wanted to ask, she wanted him to know that she won't find fault in him for it.]

Am I...?

[moonlighttag]

What I mean to say is have you- [there's no easy way to put this.] died. In your world.

[She was not expecting his question to be about that, though. She shakes her head.]

No. [She tries to keep smiling.] Someone important to me sacrificed his life so that I might live.

[he falls quiet, taking that information in for a moment. he could understand the sentiment.

he nods quietly, and makes the next assumption.]
