[Karen had always felt drawn to fire. She sat near to the bonfire and watched the flames dance. She tried to remember how it felt to have the flames actually on her palm. It would probably be harmful to her if she tried to do so at this very moment.

She smiled. How would she tell this strange story to the people back home? Because she was going to get home. She wasn't sure how she knew. Women's intuition, maybe.]

[Nataku looks around to see if there is anyone around. There does not seem to be enough to overhear him. He wonders if she knows what it is that he thought of her -- he did not get the chance; though, he only just began to understand at the time of his death. His death. Kamui told him that it hurt Karen. He wonders on it and asked how she was when she came, but she says that she is fine. Is she fine? She would not hide it?

His head tilts as he stares at her for a time, before calling out to her. In a single word, letting her know all of his feelings. He wonders if this is one what one calls "improvement."]

[If someone were to ask her, before both Kamui's joined the fight, that she was to become someone's mother, she would have laughed. The thought never occurred to her, at least not on its own. And whenever someone would bring it up, she could deny its plausibility with a number of reasons: her job, her past, her own relationship with her mother and how she was constantly aware that the world they had at the moment might all be gone come that fateful day. And so the shock of being called "mother" by this child didn't stem from the fact that this child had the body of a thirty year old man and a soul of a little girl, but from the very idea itself ( ... )

[A nod in greeting, and accepting of her calling him such a name. There is a following nod to answer her question about if he would like to sit next to her, and crosses the short distance before sitting next to her.

It is an odd feeling that warms his heart, and he is fairly certain that it is not the fire itself that is doing so. This is something that is coming from himself, right? He supposes that this is the "like" that Karen had told him about. The like that he felt for her that made him believe that she deserves to continue to live.]

I did not think that I would be able to be with you. [But since he came to Death City, whenever new Guests would come, he would listen for his voice. He did not understand why. Did that mean that he was waiting for her? He supposes that it does. Why was he waiting for her?] I am ... happy ... that I am able to do so, however. [This was what they called a mutuality of feeling, wasn't it? She never thought she'd see him again. She was happy that he was alive. Whatever lingering regrets she had about surviving in exchange for his life were washed away. She was definitely thankful to be alive just to be able to have this moment with him.

This was a gesture that she had given to so many men, and only now did she mean it this much. She cupped his face in her hand, trying to hold back the full extent of her smile.]
