The Sims Medieval: The Fisherman's Challenge

Aug 18, 2011 17:19

Well, since Sushigal is the only who sent in a request, she is the one to get it. Here you are, Germany, the kingdom's blacksmith.

Traits:
Dedicated: Dedicated Sims love their jobs, but often take on a heavier workload than they can really handle. Getting more stuff done has its rewards, though, if they're up to the challenge!
Earthy: Earthy Sims love the natural world and enjoy being outdoors. They also look great in brown or green outfits. (There weren't many fitting things for Germany.)
Morose: Morose Sims are rarely in a good mood. It's quite difficult to make them happy, because they simply don't want to be happy.

Now, let's start our next quest.

The royal advisor Germania had announced that the royal fishing contest had started. Everyone were welcome to compete. He had all information. After a delicious breakfeast of boiled mud (since he was to stingy to buy real food), Vash started his journey to the palace.

"Are you interested in the contest?" he asked. Vash nodded. "Everyone who haven't already won the contest once can compete. The participation fee is only 100 simleons."

Vash decided this was far too expensive for him. After some discussing, he managed to talk him into letting him join without paying.

"I suppose we can skip the participation fee just this once. This is how the competition works. The person who submits the biggest fish during the next few days wins the price. The earlier contest winners Barney and Marlon may give you some useful advice, but be warned: one of them is an old eccentric known to give questionable advice. But I forgot who it was, sorry!" he said.

"Thank you for that helpful information," Vash mumbled sarcastically. Germania glared at him.

As Vash travelled through the village he stumbled over a toothless beggar sitting on a pile of dirty rags. The beggar slowly looked up with his only working eye held out a bony arm with a cracked wooden cup in clawlike fingers. "Alms to the poor," he moaned. Vash looked around to make sure no-one noticed it, then discretely flicked a coin into the cup. Taking care of a certain little sister would melt your heart a bit too.

The beggar's eyes lit up when he bit it with his yellow teeth and he nodded to Vash. "Thank you so much. May the Watcher bless you with a beautiful day," he whispered. Vash looked around, then shrugged and headed towards the beach with a small smile. As he arrived, he saw two old men and understood these were the former champions he had heard about.

"Why, hello there! Want some help with the contest? Well, if you want my help, you'll have to make me an eel stew, and I'll give you some advice that'll give you victory. Ol' Barney can catch anything in the water, but he can't cook it very good. But don't listen to that Marlon. He's a real liar."

He then spoke to the other man, Marlon.
"So you want help winning the contest?" Marlon asked. "Good of you to talk to an old sea dog like me. If you want my help you'll have to get an apple for me, so we can get going. Oh, and don't listen to Barney over there. He's a bit... insane." By chance Vash already had an apple with him, and thus decided to go with Marlon. He handed it over.

"That looks like a nice snack," Marlon said. "Very well, listen now: fishing is mainly in the mind. If you're in a good mood and focused the fish will bite. Also, different kinds of fish lives in different waters. So if you can't get what you want, try another place. Go and see if you can get a good one now."

Vash nodded and went to the river to get some fish. After a while, he managed to catch a big eel. He headed towards the castle and showed it to Germania.

"Is this good?" he asked.

"Afraid not. We've already gotten a huge sea bream, it's much bigger than this," Germania answered. Vash groaned, but headed back to his house for some sleep.

The next day, he discussed his progress with Marlon.

After he had calmed down from his... lively discussion Marlon spoke.

"A huge bream, you say? Then there's only one thing for you to try. It's just a legend, but some say that every 50th year, an enormous lobster shows itself for a downcast fisherman who needs a big catch. The lobster only feels sympathy for the saddest individuals, so so you must prove that you're pathetic enough to win its favor."

Vash sighed but decided it was worth a try, so he did his best to become as miserable as possible. He went without food, he went without sleep, he ignored his duties and with it lost the chance for profit, and worst of all, he talked to people without it being business-related!

After a while, he tried fishing, and after several hours of no fish, he saw something in the distance. With pretty much no difficulty at all, as if it wanted to be caught, he caught the huge lobster. He held it up and nodded contently. This would definitely win the contest.

After this was done, he decided he would spend the rest of the day trading in a city a short boat trip away.

During this trip, the second mate suddenly shouted "Mermaid!" And indeed, when the crew gathered by the forecastle they saw a strange and beautiful sea creature, with glittering hair. She looked as if enchanted at Vash.

He decided to see if perhaps he could make her trade him some treasures of the deep, and gestured to her to come closer.

However, before he could open his mouth the crew threw their nets towards her, but she gracefully avoided them. The mermaid waved goodbye in a cocky way, and then dove back under the waves. This made the already worn-down crew even angrier. Vash was furious at the men and withdrew their grog rations for the rest of the trip.

After this, he headed towards the castle to give Germania the big lobster. It almost managed to make Germania show an expression other than annoyance.

"Impressive, impressive. Some people may say lobsters aren't fish, but try telling that to the moron who made up the rules. Normally I give people the chance of catching a bigger fish, but I highly doubt anyone will catch anything bigger. Congratulations, you are our winner. Here's your price," he said and handed over a bag of money. Vash got a greedy glint in his eyes as he held it. This was worth it after all.
