He didn't tell David about her. He trusted David probably more than anyone in the world, but he kept her a secret, anyway, because it was special and new for him to meet a girl on his own, outside of work, and have it... maybe work out.

But about a month after they started dating, David said, "You seem happy."

Colby thought about date nights at the grocery store and soft skin warm under his hands, and he shrugged. "It's spring, man. The weather's gorgeous, my birthday's coming up... Why wouldn't I be happy?"

"Because you're a moody bastard," David said dryly. "No, you seem happier than usual." He paused and Colby didn't say anything. "It's a good thing."

She found out that he sometimes chose extra sleep over breakfast in the mornings, and she baked him a batch of muffins to keep in the freezer so he'd never go to work hungry. He offered to change her light bulbs or fix her plumbing and she sighed and shot a pointed look at the sturdy red toolbox on the floor of her closet. "You're so heteronormative," she said.

"I'm just trying to help," he protested.

She tapped her pencil against the newspaper spread across her lap. "Help me with this crossword. What's a four-letter-word for 'massage parlor sounds?'"

He coughed. "I definitely wouldn't know that."

A week later he was sitting at his desk, typing up a report, when he heard David come up behind him, and suddenly cool fingers were pushing aside his shirt collar to press at his neck. He felt a small ache.

"What the--"

David's eyes were narrowed, but he was smirking. He drew back his hand and pointed. "That is a hickey."

Colby tugged his collar to cover the spot. He'd been in a hurry that morning and hadn't noticed it. "I... ran into a door?" he tried.

"The funny thing about this," David said, "is that you're embarrassed about it, instead of just telling me about last night's date."

Colby straightened up. "Well. It wasn't really a date, per se. More like just a... really hot make-out session."

"With...?

Eventually David was going to find out, anyway, either when Colby had him measured for a Best Man tux or when he fell into a deep, tequila-soaked depression, depending on how this relationship turned out.

"I've been seeing this girl," he admitted. "It's pretty great."
