There is a spot on Sonia's running route where she slows down to a brisk walk. Not that she runs the entire route, but if she hasn't slowed down yet, she makes it a point to do so at that particular spot. That's when she lets all of the thoughts she's been holding back for the last thirty minutes or so tumble out of confinement ( Read more... )

There's someone casually leaning against the door to her apartment.

She doesn't move when Sonia comes into view, but she turns her head to look at her. She smiles gently.

"...hi, Sonia."

Sonia freezes. The keys to her apartment are poised in her hand.

There's a very long pause.

"...Kathy?"

She smiles, and she pushes herself off the door. "How have you been doing, Sonia?" She takes a step forward.

"Fine," comes the response, so conditioned that it's entirely automatic now.

Another long pause.

"How are - are you okay? Why are you here?"

Because it stands to reason that the only reason Kathy would come to see her after so much and so long would be if something terrible had happened. Right?

Kathy follows Sonia in. "So, I've heard something about you working for Two-Face...?"

"Yeah, well..."

She needs something to drink. Kathy mentioned coffee. She heads to the kitchen.

"Technically, I'm not working for Two-Face. I work for Harvey Dent. And I don't even want to know how you found that out."

Kathy snorts. "Harvey Dent's alter-ego isn't a deep dark secret, Sonia," she replies. "And you get paychecks from him every two weeks."

"Yeah, okay," Sonia says. "You know that it's weird that you keep track of where my paycheques are coming from, right? Because that's weird."

Coffee's on. Sonia takes a drink from a water bottle before she continues.

"Anyway. He's just Harvey Dent now."

"Thorne, huh? What'd the fat bastard do to Harvey?"

"He hasn't exactly been open about it," Sonia admits. "But there's -"

She lowers her voice instinctively.

"We're working on... something. A way to nail Thorne to the wall legally."

There's no hesitation.

"What can I do?"

Stay away is Sonia's immediate response... but she catches herself.

Kathy can take care of herself. She's always been able to take care of herself. Sonia's always had a tendency to take responsibility for the people she cares about - but Kathy deserves more credit than that, surely.

Still.

"Look, Kathy, if Thorne figures out I'm investigating him again, this could get dangerous. I don't want to get you into even more trouble. Are you sure you want to get involved in this?"
