lol, I think the main difference is that most people would see something be de Sade and think "Oh, there's some weird historical literature. That person is probably studying de Sade."
Whereas, they see "50 Shades of Grey" and as awfully written as it is, they're still gonna think "hehe, that person's reading PORN!"
Which I think is kinda cool. It just means that porn is becoming recognised as something women like too, and it could also lead to erotic fiction being seen as something more acceptable and therefore publishable by more mainstream publishing companies. Which is good news for all the authors out there who specialise in smut and erotica. :)
It is actually awesome that smut and erotica are becoming more acceptable in public!
If only it would not be such utterly horrible stuff that is 'okay to read'. One of my best friends bought 50 Shades and I practically begged her to let me find some good D/s fanfic for her in the fandom of her choice. No. "But it´s a best-seller!" Ack!
I'm not reading them, but as my friend dora-the-nymph said the other day, I kinda feel a little bit of solidarity with the people who read it on public transport. What they're doing, essentially, is reading smutty fanfic - and c'mon... who hasn't read smutty fanfic on the train? As lame as the book might be, they're still reading porn (and everyone KNOWS its porn) in public. Which... yeah... is kinda awesome. :D

I´ve read de Sade´s Justine on the tube but I would never-ever be caught dead with (or pay money for) that thing!
