Damaged, grounded John - a painful, gentle window into the reality of a war veteran's (any war, any veteran) life.
The way that there are some things in this world that cannot be physically, logically expressed. The way that making art will never exactly translate those things, and yet still communicates them with all their undiluted power.

The idea of John, in glasses, sometime after this point; an unassumingly successful writer in a soft, comfy cardigan (with darning patches on the elbows), writing love poetry and wishing to God he could actually pretend it was something else... Or perhaps, not realising it was love poetry in the first place.
This was astonishingly lovely, tactile right down to the soul. I'm so happy to have read it! Thank you for writing it.

He's stopped feeling like a bottle choking on its cork.
This was lovely - I think it's a great image for John, with his near-complete inability to express (or be aware of) his feelings. What comes to mind most clearly is the expression he had towards the end of "Miller's Crossing" during *the* conversation with Rodney. Marvelous.
