Isabelle didn't generally tend to eavesdrop on people's conversations, particularly with themselves, but she recognised the small girl sitting there chatting unhappily with her rabbit. The run could wait, assuming she could do anything. Of course, it was always worth a shot.
She slowed down from her daily run, easing gradually into a slower jog, and shifted the seraph blade where it hung at her hip to a more comfortable position as she approached the swing. "Hey, are you okay?"
"And mine was beaten to death. When did it become a competition?" Her tone was perhaps a bit sharp, but there really was a reason Isabelle didn't often get along with other girls: they had one-track minds, and they always thought of themselves.
"You made it one," Alice stood up and turned to face Isabelle. Alice didn't take well to sharp tones. Especially... well... usually from older women. Her eyes narrowed a bit. "I'm sorry for your loss, even though I never met your brother. But you decided to make it a competition miss. You're clearly in your own grief still so I doubt you can help me with mine at the moment."
Alice picked up Basil and turned to leave. She paused for a moment and pulled a daisy from nearby and held it out to Isabelle.
Isabelle just stared after Alice, mouth curved into a disapproving expression. At least she had accepted that things weren't going to change, not that Alice could possibly fathom that. Suddenly, Isabelle was glad that she had been brought up to understand death and not go on hoping that people wouldn't leave her. It made her well-adjusted, she decided then, plucking the daisy from Alice's fingers.
Alice gazed at Isabelle for a long time before the daisy was plucked from her hand. She gave a small curtsy and then went on her way. Talking to Isabelle had done absolutely nothing as far as she felt. She didn't even really understand making something a competition. All she had told the other girl was that her brother was a vampire, how was that making anything a competition. But Alice supposed it was another adult thing.
