Ciel's hat, as it happened, rolled right off the roof and into the path of a certain mottled blue-black dragon. Toothless stared, wide-eyed at the article, watched it blow to the side, then looked up to the roof to see who had dropped it. There was a funny-haired, one-eyed human up there, and he had shouted something Toothless didn't understand before he disappeared from view again.

Well, that was interesting. Maybe he wanted his funny flying thing back.

Curious, and ever eager to please, Toothless trotted after the fallen top hat, picking it up gently by the rim in his gums, before moving back to stand just below where Ciel had peered over the edge. He whuffed, curious, and clawed at the side of the buildig. Hey! Look back down here, I think this is yours!

Grunting again, this time sounding rather amused, Toothless nodded and crouched down toward the roof for a moment. Hold on, Ciel.

And with a burst of energy and a single, strong beat of his wings, they were off the roof. They glided smoothly for a moment, straight outwards, until Toothless started to lose altitude. Having grown accustomed to his inability to actually fly solitary anymore, the dragon shifted his wings to keep them gliding through the air, angling his body and tail around in time. The end result was an approximate forty-five seconds of being airborn before the dragon beat his wings against the air once more as he landed and trotted along for a moment. He folded his wings carefully, then, and gurgled to let Ciel know it was safe to open his eyes.

With his eyes closed, Ciel found the sensation not terribly unfamiliar or unpleasant. Although he disliked heights, there had been several occasions where Sebastian had carried him while leaping through the air. It wasn't exactly flying, but Ciel found he felt nearly as secure as those times ( ... )

Toothless wasn't so bold as to expect Ciel to thank him, though when the topic was brought up he found himself quite appreciative. He didn't need anything in return, didn't even necessarily want it, but he was glad to at least have the human's gratitude. He crooned idly at the pettings, and then chittered on about Hiccup for a moment before it occurred to him that Ciel couldn't understand him. Folding himself and setting his hind quarters on the ground and shifted to gently bump his head against Ciel's hand. He'd introduce Ciel and Hiccup sometime if he had the chance-- though he wasn't entirely sure that they'd get along, given how fancy Ciel appeared and how...

...well, how did one describe Hiccup's particular flavor of Vikingism? Toothless shook his head. Following Ciel's line of sight back to the roof, the dragon tilted his head curiously and whuffed. What? I just got you down from there, now what?

Belatedly, he noticed the lack of hat on Ciel's head or in his hands. His reptilian face sort of scrunched into a frown. Oh, bother

The display of affection surprised Ciel at first. And then, he smiled. a distant sort of look, even as he stroked the dragon's nose. the big black beast, although they looked nothing alike, reminded him of Sebastian -- the loyal family dog, not the demon butler he had named for the beloved pet. That dog had been a constant companion, and strangely enough, he still missed him every now and then. He'd even considered getting a pet, but in the end, pets would only be another hindrance, another responsibility.

Ciel noticed the change of attention and behavior from Toothless, and simply reached to touch him behind the ear. "Don't worry about it. It blew off once, it will probably blow off again."

Maybe he should get a pet. How was it this thing had managed to calm him so much?

Appreciating the pettings, Toothless closed his eyes over and crooned softly. Has he known that Ciel were likening him to a family pet, he may have been slightly offended, if only because he was far from a pet, but at the same time, perhaps slightly honored. He knew how highly some humans regarded their pets, how much they loved them. He supposed that, while neither of them would ever refer to the friendship as such, Toothless was sort of like Hiccup's pet. Or maybe Hiccup was like Toothless' pet, it was hard to tell some days.

Still looking after the hat for a moment, Toothless finally tore his eyes away from the roof to frown slightly at Ciel. Hopefully when the hat blew off the roof it would blow off in this direction again, instead of being carried off to Thor-Only-Knew-Where.
