Out on one of her daily runs, Kara noticed Gavroche and slowed her pace to a jog, getting her breathing back under control as she kept an eye on him - she'd always had damn good eyesight - and when she saw him reach for the bread she huffed out a sigh. Clearing her throat she stopped for a second to wipe sweat from her brow and wipe her palms on her trousers before catching up to him, stopping behind him and clearing her throat.
"Hey kid," she said, trying for friendly but still coming off with an authoritarian ring to it. Hard not to after years in the military. She waited for him to react, standing at ease, a half-smirk on her face.
[[ooc: Affected but really, not much of a difference.]]
Gavroche paused in what he was doing and looked over his shoulder and up. Oh. An adult. Rather than be bothered though, he gave her the toothiest of grins as he turned to face her.
"Hello there. Like this day we're having?" Nope, he wasn't bothered one bit by the sight of an adult who probably wanted to stop him.
It just meant finding the right time to snatch and run.
Taking a few steps closer, her mouth quirked up into a smile and she planted her hands on her hips, clicking her tongue and looking down at him.
"Can't complain, great weather for going out for a run." She took another step or two so that he'd be within grabbing range just in case. "What about you kid, what you up to out here?"
Well this was going to be tough. She was close now. But that smile on his dirty face didn't falter. He was a happy child by nature and something like this wasn't going to slow him down.
"Admiring the view. Pretty sight, don't you think, Miss What's-Your-Name?" Very pretty as far as his stomach was concerned.
"Well, hurry up, boyo," said the man who's been poking at the bread beside him, raising an eyebrow as he moved to block the line of sight of the shopkeeper. "Your sticky fingers are too slow."
That was enough to make him pause a moment or so. An adult helping him steal something? Never thought he'd see the day. Grinning, he darted forward to grab one of the loaves to hide under his filthy rag he called a shirt.
A shadow befell the boy. A very tall, broad, dark shadow.
Chief Inspector Javert, due to his high rank, rarely found himself patrolling the streets as he had in his youth. It just happened to be a very poor stroke of luck for the boy that the middle-aged man had decided to walk to work that day. And, in passing the local bakery, he spotted a very familiar delinquent right at the bread stands.
Rather than say anything, Javert silently lurked behind Gavroche with a tap of his foot, his eyes locked on that hand like a feline ready to pounce.
Now Gavroche didn't like the looks of that shadow. It was very familiar to his eyes and one glance over his shoulder confirmed why. But did he look nervous? Scared? Nope.
In fact, he gave the Chief Inspector one of his best smiles.
No. Gavroche was not a boy that let nervousness overcome him. Instead, he was the foolish, cocksure sort that prided himself on eluding police pursuit.
A pain in the ass, essentially, and a good waste of Javert's morning walk.
"Made brighter by your smug mug," said Javert coldly. He was still staring intently at the boy and his buttery fingers. "Oh, don't let me interrupt." That was definitely a dare. "Continue."
"Continue, Inspector? It's like you're expecting me to do something bad."
Which he was but that wasn't the point. This was the game of 'seeing how many buttons could be pushed before dear Inspector Javert snapped'. It was a fun game. Too bad most people didn't play it.
Humming, he put on his best look of pure innocence.
Gavroche looked at her and blinked. Not everyday someone told him to go ahead and take something. Then he smiled at her as he snatched up the bread and started walking.
Breaking off some, he started eating. Oh that was good.
He kept smiling as he looked back at her. "You just going to take and hang out. Who is the amateur now?"

"Aaaaand - "
"Hey, I saw that! Put that back, boy - !"
Loki snorted, grabbed a bun, and shoved the boy in the general direction of the crowd. "Run!"

Therefore, he was keeping the bread, thanks.
Ducking through the crowd, he turned a curious eye up towards the person who'd helped him. Why not? He was wondering if he was still there.

Go on, Gavroche. Try and take it, now.

She glanced at him with a raised eyebrow.
"Still, rather amateur for a thief."

"You, obviously." She said cooly, gold eyes amused.
