It would only be a matter of time before a chakra signature slowly revealed itself from a distant line of trees -- warm, steady, a quiet hum that was as gentle as the breeze that rustled through the leaves.

It was only there for a flash -- a moment of warmth -- before it suddenly disappeared, suppressed when it encountered Kisame's signature.

Kakashi's eye narrowed as he snapped the book shut and rose from his spot in the grass.

This chakra signature -- it was too familiar, and he knew just from the edges of his own brushing against it, that it wouldn't be friendly.

What Kisame found was only but a hint as well, but he knew it just as well as the other did. He could tell by the way the hint of chakra drew away from him immediately after coming in contact, that it knew him, whoever it was. But it was more than enough to tell him that this familiar prey was nearby, and a small toothy grin creeped across his face.

"Well, well, I certainly wasn't excepting any other ninja besides Itachi around here."

He wasted no time in tracking the other ninja down, swiftly jumping on top of low roofs and slipping quietly into the darker corners of the area.

Wind whipped past Kakashi as he sprang from branch to branch, leading a trail deeper into the forest, away from where any other innocent souls might accidentally wander across the path.

He hoped luck was on his side and the confrontation would result peacefully -- hoped that this chakra which spiked and stabbed and cut hard like a bad landing in rough water, didn't belong to someone he'd killed in the twenty-four years that he'd been a ninja. And even if it did, he hoped, too, that here in this place that was so peaceful, they could let things go -- there was no point in fighting if you weren't even alive, right?

That is, unless that particular soul wanted retribution, and wanted to wipe Kakashi's existence out completely.

The jounin hid himself carefully, then suppressed his chakra levels and all other signs of his existence completely.

Then, he waited.

Itachi could feel the massive, nearly-uncontrolled rolling of waves in the chakra that had just flowed through the area, like a calling card. It had been some time since he had last felt it, but he knew who was trying to reach him easily.

Ah, so your time here has come, too, Kisame...

He closed his eyes, allowing his own energy to respond, fanning out and touching the searching chakra. And then he waited. If Kisame felt his reply, he would know soon enough.

There it was. Kisame knew Itachi wouldn't have gone off too far and quickly made his way to where Itachi was. It wasn't difficult to find him.

"Where were you?"

Itachi stared at his partner, somewhat more relaxed than he had been in some time since he had come to this place, due to the familiar territory. Although it seemed that his partner was as confused as he had been when he first arrived.

"I've been here for some time. I hadn't expected you to get here so soon, but I guess it's not that surprising."

"For some time?" Kisame asked, raising an eyebrow. "You make it sound like you were testing me or something."

Kisame felt a little more relaxed too, however, now that he had found his partner.
