Kisame had Samehada slung over his shoulder, partially unwrapped and dripping with a dark liquid-y substance. It may or may not have been blood. It may also have been mud, but who knows, right? The majority of his face was hidden ( Read more... )

It would only be a matter of time before a chakra signature slowly revealed itself from a distant line of trees -- warm, steady, a quiet hum that was as gentle as the breeze that rustled through the leaves.

It was only there for a flash -- a moment of warmth -- before it suddenly disappeared, suppressed when it encountered Kisame's signature.

Kakashi's eye narrowed as he snapped the book shut and rose from his spot in the grass.

This chakra signature -- it was too familiar, and he knew just from the edges of his own brushing against it, that it wouldn't be friendly.

What Kisame found was only but a hint as well, but he knew it just as well as the other did. He could tell by the way the hint of chakra drew away from him immediately after coming in contact, that it knew him, whoever it was. But it was more than enough to tell him that this familiar prey was nearby, and a small toothy grin creeped across his face.

"Well, well, I certainly wasn't excepting any other ninja besides Itachi around here."

He wasted no time in tracking the other ninja down, swiftly jumping on top of low roofs and slipping quietly into the darker corners of the area.

Wind whipped past Kakashi as he sprang from branch to branch, leading a trail deeper into the forest, away from where any other innocent souls might accidentally wander across the path.

He hoped luck was on his side and the confrontation would result peacefully -- hoped that this chakra which spiked and stabbed and cut hard like a bad landing in rough water, didn't belong to someone he'd killed in the twenty-four years that he'd been a ninja. And even if it did, he hoped, too, that here in this place that was so peaceful, they could let things go -- there was no point in fighting if you weren't even alive, right?

That is, unless that particular soul wanted retribution, and wanted to wipe Kakashi's existence out completely.

The jounin hid himself carefully, then suppressed his chakra levels and all other signs of his existence completely.

Then, he waited.

The chakra was fading fast, and he knew now that this ninja wasn't just some ordinary jounin-level ninja. He was smart, and knew how to hide himself well. Kisame, on the other hand, didn't like using the chakra-supressing technique... but did it nonetheless.

Samehada's bandages unraveled slowly as he came closer to the area where he assumed the other ninja was. He felt his blood boiling at the thought of finally fighting someone without having Itachi pull him out of battle prematurely.

But despite his excitement, he stood calmly and silently in the opening where Kakashi could see him clearly.

Well, if it wasn't an oversized fish out of water.

Kakashi wondered who made sushi out of Itachi's former partner, then wondered if Itachi had any idea that he was even here. This... was going to definitely be a little more trouble than he expected.

Especially if Kisame had no idea that he was even dead.

Kakashi sighed, considering his options. He could evade, and find Itachi, as much as that was the last thing he wanted, and have the Uchiha deal with it -- or he could deal with Kisame himself.

It didn't take him too much thought to come upon an answer.

Looks like he'd have to go fishing by himself.

Kakashi loved fish. But he wasn't a fan of fishing. Too much work, really.

He let his chakra unfurl from him slowly, keeping it steady and cautious, but not with any kind of malicious intent as he slid out of the shadow of the trunk of the tree he'd hidden himself in, and onto the branch, casting a quiet, grey eye down on the Akatsuki member from his vantage point.

Kisame slowly felt the presence of the ninja materialize from above. It took him a while to notice, though, and it confused him slightly to know that they'd been taking their time in greeting him. How rude.

But rude or not, Kisame didn't mind. He just looked up slightly and grinned.

"So, if it isn't the Copy Cat Ninja," he said, already feeling the snark welling up inside of him. "I was hoping it was the other idiot with the poor excuse of a haircut, but I suppose you'll do."

His grip on Samehada tightened.

The other idiot with the poor excuse of a haircut?

Oh, right. Gai.

Konoha's very own green beast.

"Well, well, what do we have here," Kakashi drawled as he kept his posture relaxed and seemingly unguarded, sliding a hand into his pocket as his body assumed a natural, uncaring slouch, despite taking notice of the shark's grip on his weapon.

"I don't have any intention of fighting you. It's pointless, seeing as we're both, well. Dead."

Dead? Kisame didn't want to admit it, but he was caught slightly off-guard. He paused for a moment as if in thought, but then started to chuckle. He even released the grip on Samehada and let his arms fall to his side as he tried to get a hold of himself.

"And what makes you think that we're 'dead', hm? I don't remember dying by anyone's hand."

"Mm...well, a number of factors," Kakashi began in a rather blithe manner. "I suppose Pein attacking Konoha and me falling in battle from chakra exhaustion would be one," he raised one finger for emphasis. "And the Yondaime Hokage-sama's presence here would be another," a second finger went up in the air. "Oh. And maybe you haven't noticed, but this isn't the same world we came from."

His arm dropped to his side then as he just stared rather impassively down at Kisame.

"If you don't remember dying, then that means you had a brutal death. Those of us who died quietly, remember how we died. Those of us who didn't... don't remember much at all. Saa... It's just too bad that we have to share the same afterlife. I suppose there isn't a... mmm... aquarium more suitable for you."

Now Kisame was just plain confused. He wasn't sure if Kakashi was doing it on purpose to make him drop his guard, or if he was just plain off his rocker, but he wasn't planning on falling for it either way. The part where Kakashi claimed that Pein attacked Konoha, however... that part worried him a little. That wasn't supposed to happen until later, yet the Copy Ninja somehow knew already.

As for the Yondaime statement... Kisame just decided to ignore that one. He wasn't sure how to reply to such a dumb statement like that, anyway.

"I assure you, I've realized that this isn't the same world," replied Kisame. "And I double assure you that I remember everything perfectly... without dying.

Kisame couldn't choke down the laugh that came along with that statement. The last thing he remembered was telling Itachi that he was going to take a quick nap. He also managed to ignore the aquarium comment as well, even if a muscle near his eye twitched irritably.

"Well, I guess you can stay in denial about it. A lot of people do, because it's easier for them in this world," Kakashi shrugged, his palm sliding against the back of his hair, as he slid his fingers through it. "I guess if it makes you happy to be ignorant, you might as well stay that way."

His limbs seemed to grow even more relaxed as even caution slightly ebbed from his chakra signature -- or at least, it would've felt that way to Kisame.

"They say ignorance on fire is better than knowledge on ice, anyway. You can be a shining example of it."

Kakashi wasn't really counting on Kisame to actually understand what he meant.

The corners of Kisame's lips started to pull downward in a frown. He didn't like being called ignorant, especially if he was pretty convinced that the was very much alive. He had a feeling that just talking to Kakashi wasn't going to make him feel any better.

"Have you ever thoguht that maybe you're the ignorant one?" As he said this, he pulled Samehada off his back, and menacingly pointed it in Kakashi's direction.

The words "Kakashi" and "ignorance" didn't exactly fit in the same sentence.

The jounin quirked a brow slightly as he studied the slightly agitated fish below him, then sighed.

"Maa..." It wasn't really an answer.

"Either way, as I said before, I don't have any intention in fighting you, so you might as well put that down." His eye was trained on the Samehada, hitai-ate still lowered.

Kakashi's lax nature just made Kisame all the more irritated, though he was very careful not to show it. He had worse encounters with that ugly green ninja.

"I believe this fight was inevitable," he replied, his voice low.

With a lightening quick swing of Samehada, he broke the tree that Kakashi was sitting on in half.
