Dusk is one of the hardest times to see much of anything. There's too much light for eyes to adjust to spotting moving shadows, and there's just too little light to pretend it's still day. ( Read more... )

Whatever anyone else's reason was for not taking note of Danny, Lloyd's excuse was...

...well...

...does trying to catch snowflakes on your tongue count as a good excuse for not paying attention to anyone else at all?

It isn't until Danny flails and yells, just a few feet away, that Lloyd's attention snaps back to where he is. He jerks around, startled, and reflexively reaches out.

"Whoa, watch out!"

The excuse only counts if your name is Lloyd Irving.

Lloyd's reach is more than enough to close the distance between him and Danny. There's a tense moment where Danny's flailing hand is waving nowhere near Lloyd's, but they manage at just the last minute.

When we say last minute, we really mean it: Danny comes to his abrupt stop while leaning over the water, inches away from one seriously cold bath. "AH!"

A beat. "Lloyd!"

Amazed surprise freezes on the spot: his heel is slipping. "Gah--Pull me up, quick!"

Lloyd starts with surprise again when Danny says his name, and he nearly fumbles the other boy's grip before he recovers himself and jerks the boy away from the freezing fountain. Because he doesn't recognize Danny. The white hair, the green eyes so bright they almost seem to glow, he's never seen anyone like him.

First things first, though.

"You all right?"

"I think so. Thanks for the save, um--" Danny brings his gaze up to meet his, and for the first time Danny seems to realize that yes, he's in ghost form, and no, Lloyd doesn't actually know who he is.

"Uh."

Play it smooth! "Lloyd, right? I mean--that's your name?"

[Alice, and her pre-dinner snack meat, have been soaked!]

[sputters and shivers] W-WHO FUCKING DID THAT?!!?
[sneezes and looks around]

*Danny chooses just that moment to surface, gasping hugely and flinging water from the motion everywhere. It takes him a full second to figure out where he is, and what to do about it, and when he does, he drags himself to the fountain's edge, looking (and feeling) like he's pushing through lead.*

Cold! *Danny manages through chattering teeth. He doesn't appear to to have noticed her and her (ruined) pre-dinner snack.* COLD!

*Danny freezes, staring at the turkey leg held menacingly at his nose.* Um.

Gesundheit?

*Then the coldest damn breeze on the planet blows past ("GAH!") and Danny speed-staggers past her like she's not even there, climbing out of the fountain.*

*To add insult to injury, water displaced from the sudden addition to the fountain splashes over in her direction.*

*Danny surfaces a second later, like a sea monster from a bad horror movie: a huge, dramatic gasp, with even more water splashing everywhere. He also (somehow) looks even paler than before. (Perhaps it's that subtle addition of freezing-temperatures blue to the mix.)*

Th-That's cold! *He starts for the fountain edge.*

[Maverick was enjoying his evening stroll through the village. He found that walking through this quaint little place was relaxing in a way and allowed him to clear his mind.

As he walked past the fountain, he heard someone cry out and then there was the sound of a lound splash. Maverick soon found himself (and his nice and expensive suit) completely soaked with freezing cold water. ]

What in the world!?

*There is a high-pitched keen of complete distress from the fountain water. The next moment, Danny scrambles his way out of the fountain, landing ungracefully in a miserable heap outside of it.*

*There's your culprit, Maverick. It's this shivering, bedraggled, and faintly glowing little kid here.*

[Maverick turns to the fountain where he sees a kid, that he could swear wasn't there before, pull himself out of the fountain and said kid was glowing.

Interesting.

He clears his throat before speaking.]

This suit was very expensive, you know.

But anyway, are you alright boy?

*Even shaking violently and having visible trouble with circulation, Danny snaps his head up at the voice, obviously ready for a stronger, angrier reaction. When it becomes clear that he's not going to be yelled at, he relaxes the tiniest bit, surprised but grateful.*

S-sure, *Danny stutters, teeth chattering. He pulls himself out of his pile and drags himself to feet, using the fountain rim for support. Even in ghost form, it seems, the shock of cold hasn't been kind.* Just--f-freezing!

I'm s-sorry about y-your suit!

Castiel was exiting the church when he spotted something peculiar - a ghost. Not a usual type of ghost, he thought, mostly because he hadn't yet found a cemetery here (though of course that didn't mean there weren't any bones), but it was also a still ghost, like it was considering something deeply, and a strange shade of blue. His curiosity piqued, he flapped closer. Blue and white, with a faint glow, like no ghost he'd never seen before. He wondered if this place had pulled the ghost here or whether it had died in this city somewhere.

Although angels did not sleep on chunks of ice. In a flash, Castiel had one arm wrapped around the ghost's stomach, his blade held up against the creature's throat. He couldn't set it to rest - not forever - but he could banish it for a long while.

"Did you die here, or were you dragged here, so far from your death it must be painful?" He growled, low.

Danny has no time to think: One moment he's minding his own business, and the next he's trapped with a knife at his throat, barely started on making a yelp of surprise.

"... What?" Is all he manages, so thrown off by the attack and the left-field question. Without waiting for an answer, he phases intangible, preparing to fling himself back. The effect is immediate: as soon as that degree of weightlessness seizes him, Danny spasms in agony and shock: his back and stomach burn. The angel hurts to phase through

Too startled to maintain intangibility, he drops it instantly, gasping for air.

"W-what--what was that?!"

The ghost - a stupid ghost, with absolutely zero sense of self-preservation it seems, tries to slide through his grace to get away from his blade. As Castiel might expect, this is pretty miserable failure on the part of the ghost. It staggers forward, hitting the ground and --

The knife slides into nowhere, and Castiel stares down at the child. His gaze is uncomprehending. "What are you?"

Danny shudders when he hits, feeling as though he's been cooked from the inside out. This isn't the first time he's had to choose survival over sitting around and dealing with pain, though, and he staggers back to his feet as quickly as he can, lifting shaking hands for--something. A defensive barrier consisting of his own frail arms? Telekenesis? Pretty pathetic for either of those, if that was the point.

"What am I?" Danny echoes, face twisting incredulously. "What do you mean, 'what am I', what does it look like I am! I'm a ghost!"
