I'm sitting next to a small pool in the shade, looking down into a dry river valley filled with thousands of migrating zebra, with some elephants for variety and the occasional giraffe. I love your descriptions of the animals. Now I'm expecting photos by you of the kudu (+their ears) and cheetahs. ;) Glad to hear you have a backup camera to use, and good luck in obtaining a more permanent replacement!

That was very classy of the guy to loan you a camera. I've only heard zebras once and "barking" is a good way to describe it. There's kind of a "hee" part from the "hee-haw" that a donkey would make. See if you can pick up that part of the sound. Also, elephants rumble. You might hear that.

actually, I'm sometimes very close to the animals (since I'm in a vehicle with an open roof) so zoom isn't helpful, and also sometimes because I don't have a large open space in which to back up yet still have a good view. But I'll soon be on the Namibia trip, and one of the people has a spare camera of the exact type of my old camera, so they'll be bringing it for me to use!
