My babble of Babel

Why is it that, when I try to speak German, I constantly use words from Spanish for no good reason? "Wasser con gas" is not right. My brain just can't keep them separate. (I'm connecting in Frankfurt)

Whenever I'm in another country, I want to speak German. Doesn't matter what country I'm in. I think my brain just thinks that "foreign language mode" = German.

It's a Knowing Multiple Languages Without Ultra-Fluency problem. In Italian class this semester, whenever I couldn't think of a word, my brain would spew out the German term instead. NOT HELPFUL.
