"So, it's visitation time, is it? Sorry if I'm a bit of a bore for you, but it seems I'm currently a bit tied up, so to speak...."
The voice that settled into the back of Niji's mind was obviously that of Ghost. He was, apparently, at least somewhat aware of his circumstances. Perhaps not awake, but aware and active on a psychic level.
"Guess I really screwed things up. Tried to help out and just ended up killing myself, pretty much. Sorry."
Ghost's voice trailed off, and then seemed to disappear completely. It felt as if his presence had partially withdrawn once more. Perhaps to rest, as it was likely difficult to actively communicate while recovering within the tree.
Niji's eyes flew open with a gasp and the melody stopped mid-note. Ghost?! You live! Excitement and joy flooded through her briefly before her training tamped the emotional outburst back down. Her hands were shaking, just a little. She had not realized how much she had feared his death.
Ghost dear, there is nothing to forgive. We all made mistakes. Especially me. I was overprotective of Kororen perhaps, and the others as well. I should not have asked so much of you. She closed her eyes again to keep her composure. I should have seen you were ill and dealt with it before it became such a risk.
His presence had faded and Niji thought perhaps he could no longer hear her. She was still surprised when words slipped out. "I miss you."
"Really...? Odd.... I thought I was "just a Gaijin", as you put it..."
The voice sounded...melancholy. Almost disappointed. It would seem that, whether he was awake and aware or not, his powers were still picking up psychic traffic. And had been for quite some time.
"It's quite funny.... I've gotten more powerful, since what happened...I can "hear" so much better now.... So many voices, so many thoughts... So many petty, stupid little things that run through the human mind.....Haha....It's nearly enough to drive a guy crazy....."
The voice, Ghost's voice, sounded a bit less stable than before. Less like the Ghost who'd been present before, at the very least. Bitter, perhaps, at the discovery of just what he really was in relation to "normal" people.
"...I think...I think this tree is doing something odd to my head... I think I should go back to sleep now....Just rest.....Did they say how long I'd have to be in here? I'm not too clear on that anymore.."
Niji's heart fell. He had heard what she had spouted at Kororen. This day just kept getting worse. Ghost had already been having difficulty with keeping the voices out of his head to sleep. If he slipped into madness it would never be safe to take him out of that tree. And if the tree was making it worse...
I really don't know for sure how long it will be. Robin has not told me directly, and I was too cowardly to inquire when I saw their faces. Then they brought Lady Ana to strengthen your tree. Her mental voice softened. Your lung implants have been removed. I saw that much. I believe they plan to let Kororen try to heal you, but the boy overworked himself already today.
She gave a wry laugh. At least Kororen-kun managed to return to his body on his own this time. It took a while, but he is whole once more. Her tone grew even wryer. He grows impertinent.
She sighed and turned her cheek to the tree. I warned you I was not a good person. I am what my land and my family made me. We did not allow foreigners in our land, let alone

"Don't worry about me... I'll live, I suppose, in one way or another. The tree is only a temporary matter."
His presence seemed to flicker in and out, the effort of maintaining contact a bit greater than he had anticipated.
"And...Don't worry yourself about what was said, or how I might feel. I'm just someone who can help you rest easy. If you wish, please visit me while I'm here and I'll try to maintain my duties as best as I can.."
It was unclear whether or not Ghost's feelings were, indeed, hurt by what had previously been said, but he seemed not to mind too much in either case. He was, after all, a professional when it came to hiding things, be they feelings or himself.
"I apologize that I won't be available to fulfill my promises, Niji.... To help protect the group during the conference. If the odd fellow, guy in the hat, comes back, ask him for help. I can pick up on his thoughts somewhat, even from here. He's a royal guard of some kind, and I suspect he'd gladly help.....For now, I could rest...The voice faded away again
