Niji's heart fell. He had heard what she had spouted at Kororen. This day just kept getting worse. Ghost had already been having difficulty with keeping the voices out of his head to sleep. If he slipped into madness it would never be safe to take him out of that tree. And if the tree was making it worse...
I really don't know for sure how long it will be. Robin has not told me directly, and I was too cowardly to inquire when I saw their faces. Then they brought Lady Ana to strengthen your tree. Her mental voice softened. Your lung implants have been removed. I saw that much. I believe they plan to let Kororen try to heal you, but the boy overworked himself already today.
She gave a wry laugh. At least Kororen-kun managed to return to his body on his own this time. It took a while, but he is whole once more. Her tone grew even wryer. He grows impertinent.
She sighed and turned her cheek to the tree. I warned you I was not a good person. I am what my land and my family made me. We did not allow foreigners in our land, let alone intermarry. She closed her eyes tighter. I am amazed at how comfortable I have gotten around all of you in such a short time.
A dry laugh slipped out. If I had time, I would meditate on the changes that I can and should make now. Time has been at a premium, though. I am already stealing time for myself for these moments. Soon I must return to work. Our people are scattered and we have refugees coming soon from the hospital. Tomorrow is the conference and we are well behind schedule for our preparations.
She opened her eyes to a slit to look at the work being done. Soon the food should be removed from the fire, but she did not feel like moving yet. She thought back on what Ghost had said.
You worry that the tree is doing something 'odd'. Should we find some way to get you out of there before it worsens?
