Horror Night - Ringu The Quadrilogy - Long Post

Feb 15, 2007 20:17

Mark and I have been averaging two films every Tuesday night. The first film of the evening is usually a "B" grade or unseen horror movie that we hope will live up to our expectations of creepy goodness. Usually it falls far short, with entertaining results ( Read more... )

On Ringu: I wish I hadn't seen the American version; this so much creepier overall in feel and tone and seriousness. Granted, the reveal of the first girl killed (the one found in the closet) was more horrific in the American version.

On Rasen: I really expected something different from this, and while I did get something different, it wasn't the different I wanted. From what I've vaguely heard of the real "Spirals" story, it is really about the cycles within cycles and progression of life, death and spirit. That wasn't this movie, however, I'm a completist and probably more of a scifi fan.

On Ringu 2: A return to what made the first story so good, and even more impact after seeing the revelation of Sadako's real history in 0. Japanese boys are really creepy.

On Ringu 0: The best feature is the fact that it actually tells you quite a bit about what is going on, slowly and sometimes indirectly, until the final revelations leave you creeped out. I actually had trouble sleeping (for a second) after this one; nothing seemed

I'm not a real gore fan, although sometimes it has it's place. The falling apart of bodies fits in a zombie film, the rending of flesh in a werewolf film, the sucking of blood and draining of life in a vampire film. I was very resistant to seeing Saw until finally convinced, and it's a much better film than I thought it would be. It wasn't really gory, but much more psychological ( ... )

Actually, undead zombie monkeys would probably be very frightening; they're undead, so they don't produce poo of their own...

think about it...

so, they'd have to RIP OPEN someone to get at their steamy entrails, just so they could then fling the poo at passersby - their main goal in the first place. Oh, the horror! The slain are mere collateral damage (that, and a good source of fresh poo) in the quest to excrementize gawkers.

OK, I think I've dragged this thread down to about as low as it can go...

You've thought about this far too much. :)

... aaaaaaand that's why I don't watch horror movies - my imagination is far too fertile already, and I'd rather remain in the realm of the silly.

(fertile imagination - so that's what that smell was!)

The scare the crap out of Niclo scale should be adopeted my all major media! Great reviews, they made me laugh, of the Ringu series I've only seen Ringu, which I really liked and I thought it did a much better expalanation of Sadako than the American version. I'll have to see if I can find 2 and 0.
